Welder purchase advice please

I would like to purchase a moderately good quality welder that I can use to weld aluminium as well as steel, up to about 4mm. I would appreciate advice regarding brand/model etc. Can I get by for less than 300 pounds?

You'll struggle to find even a budget machine for that amount though

Not sure what you have available in the USA but over here that budget would certainly be a struggle to find anything, even a good secondhand unit.

£300 is still in the hobby range of MIG's, albiet the slightly better one's.
