My old welder has recently started to ever so often cut out when you strike an arc. Not all the time, but it seems to be getting more and more frequent. I find myself nuging it with my toe toe get it going again, but I was wondering what is causing it. I am thinking it might be the mains wire or the plug, and I was going to get some new wire for it anyway. I am also going to get some new welding cable for the clamp and electrode holder. We opened it up yesterday to just have a look and everything seem OK, connections and what not looking fine, so I brushed some dust away and closed it up again. Can anyone help?

New leads certainly won't do it any harm but just check the wiring in the plug first...I've had loose earth wire connections cause those kind of problemsin the past

In the mains plug? I will look in there. I hope it is just that. I have had the welder for 17 years, and it has been fine. An arc welder is so simple there is little that can go wrong, so if it has lasted this long, it shouldn't be anything inside it too serious. Thanks.
One other thing is the welders body has got some superficial rust and the amps and rod size gauge alongside the sliding needle has worn off, so I don't know what amps or rod size I should be using. Is there any way I can get a new set of digits on it, or something? Any suggestions?
Mine rusted away a long time ago, you just adjust it to what works when you set up on a piece of scrap, is it as bad as this

No, not that bad. It is the numbers on the top of the body, not the front, and the insides don't seem quite so aged as that. Does anyone sell any stickers with it on, or perhaps someone has a 180 Amp welder, and can photograph the numbers, then post it on here so I can resize and print it out and somehow transfer that to the welder? I have been just finding the ideal amperage from trial and error really, but I both don't know what rods I am supposed to be using, or what amperage I am on.

It looks very similar to my old (dead) topweld 140, everthing is in the tight place to be a larger version of the topweld range, its looks like it was originally yellow too which would be the right colour, BUT the symbol at the bottom is not right for an sip machine. I seem to remember there were also Sureweld machines around at the time which looked identical but can't remember what symbol they used, but I would guess it may be one of those.
I bought my BOC Transarc 200amp air cooled set back in 1974, its in the same kinda condition, no numbers or letters left. I don't use it now as I have an inverter but I would like to renovate it back to its original condition. I dont think it would be worth a lot in a sale so I'll just keep it as a spare, may be handy if the inverter breaks down. If you can find digits or transfers please let me know and I'll keep looking too and vice/versa. Best wishes, Brian (",).

Numbers don't really matter, just make yourself a scale up - could use rod size/position instead of amps.W/A
