welder cuts out when generator revved

Id say a meter is needed before welding is to commence

yeah one which will show the frequency, once you hit 50Hz the speed is correct and the rest will follow unless the avr or capacitor has problems

you set the "throttel" flat out. it should or most usally have a stop on that sets teh engine at the correct speed for the frequency. my 7kva honda runs at 3000 rpm with the "throttel" up against the adjustable stop ( you can adjust them upto 3600 rpm for 60Hz )

cheep inverters don't like genorators, as small genorators make a lot electrical noise, when the inverters arn't actualy welding the supply noise can cause the dc voltage in them to rise to high and cause them to shut down.

put a 500w halogen lamp on the welder when trying to use the welder, gives the genorator somethign to do.

all the gennys I have ever worked on are not set flat out and can quite easily increase or lower the speed I always reset the speed after cleaning out a carb and its the same with my diesels can be adjusted either way

geeze is this place getting way over picky.

you set the " throttel" or govoner leaver as it's correctly know up against it's stop. set for full working rpm. you can use a freqency meter for carrying out adjustment of the stop, tho really if your been picy its the wrong way of doing it, engine tacho is better, clip it on the HT lead like a timeing gun.

hmm governor lever as its correctly known doesn't have a stop as you will see from the picture the governor lever connects to the throttle assembly, you could use an engine tacho for speed but ultimately with a generator you want to know its producing 50Hz so to produce 1hz you would run the engine at 60rpm multiply that by 50 and you have you 3000 rpm 50 Hz you cant run the engine flat out as mentioned earlier on in the post (3600 rpm)
as it will produce 60 hz

thats a part of not the whole govonor mech.

i tryed to be clear previously the part often called the throttel, ore correctly called the govonor lever or for penickety muppets , the engine speed adjustment lever that has a **Language**ing stop on in and it's adjustable.

if you open the actual throttel butterfly wide opne manualy they go a lot faster than 3600 rpm. last one geneorator i scrapped sat buzzing at about 8000 rpm with no load till it poped.

anyway the op was on about inverter issues with the genny inverters dont really care for frequency there more fussy about volts.
if the OP wants info PM me make an model probaly have all the data if its honda.

AFAIK the engine Speed adjustment lever is is neither the throttle nor the governor, you set the speed lever to the correct freq that is required,that lever then does not move, if the freq is to be maintained. It is attached to the governor lever usually with a spring so that the governor lever is free to move either way, dependent on the load, which in turn is controlled by either a true governor or the more crude way, a flap that is being blown by the cooling fan, either method realizes a steady engine speed .
The governor arm is then attached to the throttle lever with a rod and again another spring,the throttle lever is attached to the butterfly and is again free to move either way,(apart from the idle position) this constantly adjusts the amount of fuel mix entering the engine to maintain the correct required speed IE in uk 50hz
Either method works because of the governor lever working against both the opposing springs and the resultant force the governor puts on those springs which decides the position of the throttle lever.

I have often thought about using a modern car engine something like vw pd that will run on veg or waste engine oil n kero etc.
With the excess of power they would have, their (not so sensitive) inbuilt governor would probably suffice, along with, a massive flywheel to run a genny could give good economy, as a car it is very good on fuel and reasonably quiet.
The only problem would be the turbo vanes sticking due to running light all the time but kero would help keep it clean.
But that would run genny power and your heating in one.
I have a mate who lives in a caravan a mile from nearest mains, who heats his living van and second bathroom van, his hot water and lighting 12V and 240v with inverter using an old peugeot 205 at tickover+ a little.
Coz he got fed up of hand starting the genny all the time.
He has everything on qr couplings even the hot water, heat exchanger so can drive the car in seconds if needed.
he said it doesnt use that much more fuel, than the air cooled genny just running 240v.

An avr isn't a simple output device it has to connect to the rotor via carbon brushes and it adjusts the voltage to the rotor to keep the output voltage constant

there are some good engines about now doing 60 + mpg and probably better economy still driving an alternator

common rail diesels with peizo injectors but they really don't do very well in the game of diesel rulet.

an NA diesel is generaly more efficent than a turbo diesel off boost

unless running at high revs I think na engine would be preferable especially if you don't require the extra HP to drive it
