Welded joints

A bit of a basic question but: Thinking of making a bike rack for the camper. For steel box section is it OK to join two pieces at 90 degrees or should I form a joint as is done with wood. This would give more welded area and then I suppose stronger.

I always make a join, dunno about stength but it looks a lot neater and you don't have to either buy caps for the tube or leave it open and let all the water/dirt in

I guess you're talking about mitreing; it will look nicer if your welding is good, but not much if any stronger. The strength is in your welding quality.

Mitring it looks neater, I don't know where all the water and dirt is coming from to get into the end of your bike rack unless you park in a canal but you could just weld a piece onto the open end as you will have to block an end somewhere anyway to stop all the water and dirt getting in.
