Weld quality Second opinion

Hi All,

Busy wrecking a bike as part of a project. the bike in question was a Honda st1300, there was cracks to the fwd engine mounts, when I removed the engine the mounts came away with it. The st1300 uses its engine as a stressed component so the welds are load bearing. I'm just wondering if someone with more experience could look at the pictures and either agree and disagree with me on the point that both pictures seam to show a lack of penetration at the root.

sorry the pictures are not the best were taken with my phone but what you can see is a small bead of solidified metal between weld and parent material where the root should be.

It does look like there's some lack of fusion going on along with some pretty big voids but (and you know it ) the pics are pants. Post better ones!

If you have a good close look at the fracture surface you might be able work out where the crack originated... the dirty spot in the top right corner of the lower mount might be a clue in that the beginning of the crack will be older and so dirtier/more oxidised than the area that 'let go' once the crack had grown big enough. If there's a weld defect on the 'outside' that corresponds that could be the stress riser that started things- undercut, a crater/dimple where the weld was stopped etc.

Do you know the history of the bike, has it ever been in an accident or had the frame jigged ? You need better pictures and some of the other half of the frame where it detached from which might give more clue to what has happened.

I think the 'ST1300' scrawled in green ink over the frame might be a clue

I ride an ST13, hope to christ mine isn't 'welded' that badly...!

My last '13 was rear-ended at a pedestrian crossing, it shows up as taxed on the DVLA database so it can't have been that badly bent.

Cheers all,

the bike is a complete write off after having a heavy front end crash. This is what caused the crack without question. but it was the weld quality that got me. will take some more pictures tomorrow.

the reason im asking was planning on sending an email to Honda NZ just don't want to look like a ****. I do some welding of steel and copper alloys as part of my job and know that if I was seeing what I see here in my work i would be worried. just got no experience in ali
