PDG I can't tell if you're just deliberately being annoying but honestly your comments show a complete lack of knowledge or, at best, an inability to read other people's comments.

For anyone else in a similar position that covering doesn't keep the gas in, PDG has it backwards as the gas enters the hose outside the liner through a crossdrilled hole. All I've done is allow gas to run up inside the liner in addition.

Stripping the PVC covering back and then throwing it away at the torch end is no bad thing. The liners I buy already have the PVC stripped back and when I cut the liner to the correct length the cut has never been on a PVC covered bit of liner.

Your liner has the plastic end at the Euro connector. I have seen plastic ends both grooved and with an O ring, and plain plastic ends without an o ring which at a guess is a sort of compression seal when the cap nut is tightened down. These days I'll only buy and use liners with the brass & o ring end because of sealing issues in the past.

Right, if it's in there it's not coming out. Liner is going in and out pretty easily so I'm not 100% convinced a stray o-ring is the issue. I've ordered a new torch and might play around with the old one when I have more time to use as a spare.

pdg there isn't much to say really - you're just wrong. I suggest you stop trying to give advice on Euro assemblies as you've made a couple of statements about them that are just patently incorrect.

Incidentally the covering is there to reduce friction during installation - and has nothing to do with gas. Obviously that degree is useful for something.

I'd quote your statement but I see you've deleted it. Suffice to say, if you suspected that the liner may not be concentric inside the connector (perhaps due to a faulty connector) and suspect it was fouling the gas inlet then removing the covering at this point to allow gas up inside the liner would be a good idea. Just like at the torch end which also allows gas inside the liner, any gas going back to the machine would be in a really small volumes that would make no difference whatsoever. In either case, clearly there is something a miss with the torch setup I got with the welder so I've ordered a new one. Hopefully that'll fix it and allow me to get on with my work.

All sorted. New torch fixed it. Cut the old one down it's length to try and work out what was causing the issues. No o-ring in there or anything else so still non the wiser (it must be at least 35 years old so I just wonder if the rubber has swollen with age / oil contact etc). Removing the PVC got me from 4 LPM to about 6 LPM at the gun, but I needed a proper fix rather than an investigatory make do and that's still a bit low anyway. No issues with it leaking to the machine (0.8 wire in a brand new liner though).

Glad you got it sorted Ol but don't be too defensive mate when people are firing suggestions across the table.
Whether the suggestions are right or wrong they are put there by people who initially want to help.
Pdg has a way with words but an extremely knowledgeable guy trust me. Either way your problem with gas appears to be behind you and I look forward to seeing some of the results.

I hear what you're saying Rich but it's frustrating when folk give suggestions for things you've already tried and just described in the previous post - more so when the suggestions just don't make any sense or are based on incorrect information. Anyway, it's fixed now and I can bash on.

Can't get over how much easier this is than the TIG once settings are dialed in. Still not giving up my TIG yet though the results are so much prettier!

Oli you have the same torch as fitted to my old (similar age) Clarke welder, see pics. I had same issue with mine and as I had mine from new I knew what liners had been fitted (as I fitted them!) What I found was a slight kink in the gas tube will cause problems with the fitting of a new liner (tight fit) AND those new liners are to big for these torches. Even though they are described as type 15 there are some issues/differences. One being the gas pipe is just to close a fit to NEW(er) type liners (0.6 to 0.9) and as such restricts the flow of gas especially if the torch is well used. Try measuring the outside of the liner and the inside of the gas pipe and you will see what I mean. I ended up having to removing the new liner and using the good old fall back of net curtain wire as it's diameter is much smaller. You will need to wrap some ptfe tape or similar around the end at the socket end to make up the difference so that the liner (net curtain) is a snug fit when nut (item 21 in your pic) is screwed on. You will also find the swan neck thread, where it screws on to the torch is a different size. I replaced mine and had the die to re thread the new one. Again see pics.
So for the cost of a net curtain wire < £3 you could have a spare torch

That looks exactly the same as my old one.... Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your view point) I cut the old one open to look for a mystery o-ring that wasn't there. However, I've managed to buy a new hose locally from a supplier and am going to fit that in order to have a working spare. Annoyingly it looks like I'll also need a new swan neck! Might be as well to just give up...haha.

Thankfully the new torch fixed it so it was a £60 upgrade fix... Not earth shattering.

Thanks for the insight though - absolutely makes sense and would be the issue.
