Weld crowns

I'm relatively new to MIG welding, six months or so, and am finding that the look of my welds is different to my stick welds, which I've been doing for about 4 years.

Do MIG welds generally have a different look to stick welds? I find that my MIG welds crown up higher. Despite experimenting with every variable I don't seem to be able to achieve the same nice low profile.

Settings too cold or travel too slow. I suspect the latter. Most of your work you should be pretty much full whack with a single phase. Photo or even better a video will reveal more.

If you have tried everything else, settings wise, Maybe you need move the torch quicker?

I meant that I have tried my travel speed too, but maybe I'll give it another bash.

So all in all there's not naturally different characterisics in the look of MIG vs stick?

Most of your work you should be pretty much full whack with a single phase.

Sorry but that's rubbish, unless you know what thickness he's welding? or what max amps his machine can do? how can you say he needs to be on full power?

My small mig is 130amp, my big mig is 350amp. Yes they both are single phase machines. I sure ain't going to be running my big set on "full whack" when welding 16gauge.

I do know what machine and it's output and also know the sort of work he is doing. You keep on believing your getting 350amp on single phase

Not as regards crowning.. Are we talking in a particular position like v up? Honestly it's pure guesswork without pictures or video. Mig and mma will Always look different unless we are getting into some of the latest special programs, though excessive crowning is a fault.

Fine, so you know, but it would help if you'd said so in your reply. Anyone else reading your reply would get bad advise.

I'm so glad you know my welder better than me, being psychic must be so much better than actually having the actual welder in front of you and able to know it's spec.
