I wanna make a long (1m) SDS bit and my plan is to cut my Parkside chisel bit in half and then weld a chunk of bar between the two halves. Am I being ambitious? What material is a cheapo SDS bit likely to be made from and is it arc weldable? It will be for drilling out post holes in soft granite. If it's not a stupid idea then what kind of joint should I aim for? Someone in an old thread suggested using square bar for the extension to help clear the bit but I only want to break a few inches of rock at the bottom of the hole and then I'll remove the chippings with an augur then rinse & repeat.
I could post a pic of my SDS bit but it's just a normal SDS Max chisel bit.
