WEEE Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment End of Life - another law from Brussels.

Basically says manufacturers have to be responsible for safe disposal of their products.

Not really. I'm no green hippy or anything like that but it does get to a point where people need to think about product disposal etc. If you've ever been to the Eden project, there's a sculpture there made out of just some of the electrical equipment the average person throws out in a lifetime. Its massive. it's actually a good way of showing how wasteful the throw away lifestyle we have is. Picture below (not my picture)

I'm a member of Freecycle and I got a broken electric lawnmower which the owner was throwing out having bought a new one. The fault on the old one was ........................mains cable pulled out of the live connection in the plug If they'd checked the fuse they would have found that.

I fished a radio out of a skip - fault? blown fuse in the plug.

Weee is potentially useful legislation. The intention seems to be to get the manufacturer to either recycle or recondition electrical equipment at the end of it's life.

It it were to work as intended the manufacturers of throwaway stuff would have some increased costs, and might be presuaded to make less throwaway stuff or support their stuff a little more. Could mean the manufacturers get some incentive to provide more information about how to fix our SIPs when they go wrong and to make spare parts cheaper and more available. Or (a crazy idea) to make the SIPs work for a while in the first place.

Of course it's never going to work. It's a society problem not a legistlation problem. No way they can legislate themselves out of this one. Tax themselves out of it maybe.

The re-use part of the legislation is engouraging though. Glad the beurocrats have cottoned onto the possibility. Most of the people who pick up a welder on this forum have that intention.

Quite right. Hopefully manufacturers will be encouraged to make things easier to dismantle and re-cycle, and if something comes to bits easily it is more easily repaired.

One problem though is fashion and advancing technology, UHF tellies are going to be the next fridge mountain.

I'm also a member of "Freecycle" I think I have been in it in my own way all my life. I try not to throw out things "WHICH WILL COME IN USEFUL ONE DAY" but my garage is full of useful junk at this time. So why do people in places like Brussels have to tell us what we should know by now to save the planet and the wild life that lives on it with us

Because most people haven't a clue, couldn't care less or are too busy keeping up with the Jonesess.

I reckon someone setting up home for the first time could get everything they need off Freecycle, with a little patience.

I agree, When we extended our kitchen I managed to get a stainless steel Smeg Dishwasher (£450 worth!) that was being freecycled due to a small leak. I ended up replacing the pump for £30. The chap that I got it from reckoned that it was far superior to the replacement they had bought!
I also got a ride-on mower which was nicked, found by the local council and accidentally crushed - compensated £100

Another point...I and many like me were trying to conserve and recycle stuff in the early 70s...its taken over 30 years for SOME people to get the message and not assume we are the loony fringe OH yeah...I dont use the term save the planet because the planet would do just fine without us....Or will do just fine without us.

Nevermind freecycle, a saturday morning stood outside the entrance to the council's waste centre could kit out a few houses!

I was helping a mate move house (into a new build) a few weeks ago, and he asked me to take his old fridge and oven down the waste centre.
I goes "aye sure, I take it they're fecked then?"
"nah, they work fine. new place comes with new oven and fridge so what use are they"
Unfortunatly he doesn't "do" the internet thing so couldn't tell him to freecycle them, and i've got no storage myself. So the fully working (but slightly scabby) oven ended up down the tip.

"re-homed" the fridge though, and it now sits in the w/shop of a mates bike shop, keeping cans of irn bru cool

freecycle sounds interesting.

Here I have used Craig's list. They have a free section. I picked up some old bicycle frames, a set of bed rails and a bathroom vanity and sink.

Got some good stuff cheap on their other sections: solid wood french doors, a reciprocating saw.

Lots of stuff there and no seller or buyer fees. Nice as it has local sections, no shipping, just pick up.

Freecycle started state-side, i think. It's doing quite well at spreading all over!
