Just Google weather vanes. Hordes out there. I used that as 'inspiration' for a couple.
A point: They need to be balanced, so as there should be more area behind the pivot (about +2/3), add some weight at the front to compensate. I do this by laying it flat but still on its pivot, then add bits of metal until I get the balance. Convert the weight into an arrowhead or some other relevant feature. If you do not balance them, then they will not spin freely.

Letters can also be fabbed out of square or round bar.

The "E" only looks right viewing it anticlockwise so it's all a bit tricky.

If the letters were mounted within a circular piece, the E would look less unusual with the centre - pointing in.

It is a great word to drop into casual conversation, guarantee anybody who knows it will be more interesting than the average Joe.
Getting back on topic.
Chris, when you make it I guess you will be using the bar inside a tube fixed to the vane type of pivot, dont forget to put a ball bearing on top of the bar.
I made a spinny thing with a bar in a tube pivot, it sort of worked but I was not impressed, then I popped a bearing off a bicycle hub on top of the bar and it spins beautifully.

Just back on the original subject, took note of one on a church spire today. That one had letters mounted so that an anti-clockwise walking direction would be the correct reading position. All letters left hand side towards centre.

Did wonder if it might be an intentional choice by the church to either:

1) Go against the grain of traditional folklore just out of stubborness.

2) An attempt to put the speck on people so they'd be more inclined to enter the Church.
