Wear pad material

Seems there's two common materials, polyamide and UHDWPE that can be used but does anyone have any suggestions to what would typically be used in a sliding boom style arrangement?

For various reasons I need to ideally pull the extra dig out of my 2CX's back actor before I do any damage that is preventable.

There's a bucket load of wear pads inside the boom and being a 2CX some are a little odd and specific (I think), but regardless that bucket load of pads adds up quickly. So I'm wondering about just getting a slab of suitable material and making my own since they're just blocks with some countersunk holes in them.

CEE replaced the wear pads on his crane resto, can’t remember what he used or if they were off the shelf. If no one knows have a search.

No idea, if there had been a coefficient of friction then maybe I could have understood it but they don't so no clue.

I'm fairly sure that any HDPE, HMWPE, UHMWPE would do, I have seen polyamide in conjunction with wear pads too. Given the usage it'd see the frictional properties are less likely to be important but resistance to abrasion might be given dirt getting in there etc.

For reference, one wear pad for the 2CX seems to be circa £48 and I think of that part number there's 8 of them (and that's not all of them). A sheet of 500x500 UHMWPE 30mm thick was about £80 and I think would just about make most of the square wear pads inside the Extradig.

To be honest the use it'd get a piece of greased steel would probably do.

Telehandler wear pads are nylon. I would think excavators are the same. I believe UHMWPE is to soft for this application.

The pads jcb use are incredibly hard wearing I've got a couple of machines over 10,000 hours and still on original pads.

Phone a plastic supplier, ask for their tech department, and ask the question...

When I had missing shims/wear pad I used to go to the local supplier and ask.

I would have thought the only criteria would be for it to be hard enough to take a countersunk bolt without the bolt sinking into the material and constantly coming loose. Ali would probably be as good as anything else.

I think the JCB ones tend to be a square nut held inside the wear pad and a bolt on the outside.

Another possibility is to shim out the existing material if there is enough. Regardless I think I'm only going to figure things out fully once the boom is out but I want to finish the 6x6 engine and get that back in first.

Nylatron however used to work a treat.

My earliest experience of nylon as a wearing material was my bicycle, ages maybe 7 - oiled the squeaking crank bushes . . . which promply fell apart.

Will couple up the relevant hydraulics at some point and then pull the inner boom out.

It may have been Nylatron , I took the old wear pad to the supplier, showed it to the tech guy, he scratched his head, a light came on, I left with a large strip of wear pad material...QED..

Then I made some wear pads....problem sorted...never had a problem with them...and they were just held on with countersunk allen bolts/screws

If there is any repetition, organise your production method using jigs (plywood) so you save time.

Something like the red one could be cut to shape with a tracksaw. A wood router and (3DP) jig could also be quicker for the holes than a milling machine. A router in a table would put the chamfers on.

A router on a sled might also thickness a sheet as good as a flycutter in the mill.

Do you have a parts book for the machine? Would that not tell you what you need? It would also allow you to see if aftermarket options exist.

I was going to say the JCB parts website but it's just been to check and it's been royally screwed over . Used to have all the parts diagrams and part numbers from there but they've now apparently moved it to a £3k / year subscription FFS.

Soo..... To update the response NO. Guess I'm going to be on the hunt for a parts book now . Should have scraped the website whilst there was public access.

I do remember the last time I looked whilst I was totting up parts (mostly from Vicary as there weren't really alternatives) I think I hit >£300 inc VAT for half the boom.

Given all the pads are pretty straightforward to make I thought it'd be a bit of a fun project if nothing else, as you say just slicing things through on a table saw and then just punching the holes out with a drill / mill / router.

The plan is (when I get around to it) to couple the relevant hoses together so they just dump back to the tank (that way I can still use the loader on the machine), then I can knock out the pin holding the extradig ram in and slide the whole thing out. The rest of the arm can be pinned back up out of the way (or used for lifting if needed just without the bucket on).

When I was looking through the parts website despite having the stuff narrowed down by serial number I'm still not convinced it was correct as if you flicked over to another diagram (at the time) there were sometimes additional pads or duplicate pads so I didn't know was that for a different variant or it needed duplicates etc.

when I worked on early tele cranes the go to material was similar to brake pad / shoes.....
It was a massive crane yard....seem to remember by the second time a replacement pad was due they sold the cranes to Soudi....
