we lost one of the horses today.
danny (silken boy) was a 25yo OTTB we got straight out of the racing stables at 5 years old. he raced a lot, his best result was 4th... out of 4 horses. he loved racing, he just wasn't fast
all these pictures where in the last 6 months or so.

dad evented him all the way up to BE novice, which is actually a very small step up to 1 star (badminton on the tv is 3 star, but 1 and 2 star classes are held on the same day with a lot of the same competitors on their less experienced horses)
he was retired from eventing 6 or 7 years ago when he had a rotational fall (the deadly one). both he and dad where fine, but danny had a form of ptsd, and he couldn't cope with high level eventing anymore.
a week ago he was absolutely fine and still being ridden by a friend, but 3 days ago he started to show signs something wasn't right. the vet gave him antibiotics and said it looked like some type of infection. yesterday he was down and couldn't get up without help, so the vet came again and did bloodwork. we discovered late yesterday he was in end stage renal failure, with little hope.
25 years old for a thoroughbred especially one that raced is very old. i think the record is somewhere around 29. i certainly have never known one to hit 30.
this morning he was down on his brisket and wouldn't, or couldn't get up for over a hour.

the vet was called for the last time for the final injection. unfortunately i was unable to quite make it in time, the vet was there in 20 mins, i was 30 away, but i did go and say goodbye. i've known the old boy for 20 years. gonna miss the old guy.
