I do prefer the Barbour wax jackets but I find them uncomfortable in the summer as mines a wooden lined heavy weight one.

Don't you find that a bit stiff?

How old is your SWAZI? I had a good look over the new stuff at local stockist and I don't think it's worth three times the cost of ridgeline. The seams were not even quality. When it was made in NZ I could agree with the price, now it's been offshored I think it's wrong.

Yep ridgeline does make you sweat but I got my Smock for £120 in the sale. The SWAZI is £389.

I’ve got two Swazi smocks, ones old and still going strong. The other ones a year old or so and feels and works as good as the old one. I used to buy their waterproof trousers but they don’t last in the forestry environment, brambles and brash shred them.

I like my Ridgeline coat, warm comfortable. But if it lashes down the outer layer holds water, and takes an age to dry.

Im currently in the market for new, but not paying Kaiwaka prices.

Ive got the Kaiwaka Stormforce Blue Winter Jacket.
I call it my wearable shed.
It is primarily my work jacket.
I asked my neighbour who is a builder and fisherman what wet weather gear they use and he swore by Kaiwaka
Kaiwaka is a small town on State Highway 1 south of Whangarei.
We called into the factory shop as we were passing while they were open and had a look at available stock.
Due to being 6ft5 my size was 5xl and it was on the rack closest to the window which meantt it had minor sun damage caused by the window mesh shading the sunlight.
I got $100 off the ticketed price.
Looking at the website it looks like costs have dropped as a few years ago I had an american tourist that really wanted my jacket so I showed him the new price and we were both shocked at how much it was.

Another option could be to look at what farmers buy.

The trouble is, they're not properly waterproof, and because they're not properly breathable either, the inside of the coat is quite wet by the time I get to the pub, even if it isn't raining. I shouldn't expect too much for the price (around a tenner), but to me, if it says it's waterproof and breathable, it should be.

Well and here goes, for the very few times I venture out in the wet nowadays I bought a Dutch patrolman's jacket from one of the online surplus outlets/ I have no idea who makes this kit but I have never managed to get soaked yet.

Looks like the secret is out as I only paid £40 for mine, was a while back though:
