Water Meter problems

we had years of problems with our water, they replaced the (very old) internal meter with an external one, then the backstreet garages behind us though it was for them so kept smashing it

and one point they tried to bill us for 1.3million litres of water per month which is 2000litres per hour 24 hours a day 7 days a week

we ended up with 2 meters, one internal and one external... the external one was going round faster than the internal one

we argued for about 6 months, they swore blind water meters only ever under read not over read

they kept saying testing them was expensing and I'd have to pay, I kept saying ok

eventually they told me... it's £83 per meter to test them... so I had them both tested

turns out I was right, outside meter was over reading

still took multiple years to sort it all out

it was about 8 years from start to finish

in the end they were trying to collect fines for late payment of bills.... bills which had been cancelled because they were wrong... they finally gave up

The woman who runs that dept for NW is a neighbour of mine, our vet told me shes like a rottweiler if shes chasing you!

20 cube a year isn't a lot. South west water were around a few days ago looking for a leak that's loosing 0.5 cube per hour overnight. The main runs along a ridge of really free draining rock that makes leaks hard to find.

That said, 20cube per year is quite a bit on a household and works out at about 50l per day. Unless it's found a very easy to disappear spot, like leaking into a sewer or land drain, or possibly a well drained floor void, or your on very free draining ground, you would expect to see some kind of sign it's leaking.

If you suspect the water meter is over reading, tell them it's been vandalised and has stopped working and that you'd like it replacing.

That said, 20cube per year is quite a bit on a household and works out at about 50l per day.

20 cube is nearly half of our average annual consumption, it's normally about 55 cube.

Not sure if here in the UK if you put a bore hole in - you still gotta pay to extract the water...? (not had anything to do with the subject).

Did look at how they do it once - pipe bored in - thread sections - small air pressure pipe - then extract by using water jack principle...

Now, I am not conducting some great experiment but what I would like to do is check m water doesn't have loads of contaminants in it. So far the tap water came out at 56 and bottled water at 72, this is just a comparison scale and I wouldn't imagine for one second it is measuring ppm with any sort of accuracy. The snag is 52 is the better end of the scale and 72 is heading towards the not so good end.

Would anyone care to comment?

About 15k to drill last one I herd about. A couple of our neighbours have them since their shared spring couldn't cope in the heat wave a few years ago, and more water usage in modern life.

Around £12k here in the brecklands of Norfolk. The water table is so high and about 6 feet until you hit clean chalk.

Yes per day. They don't, I know of several going 24/7 all year.

Don't say lay few rows of bricks in a circle and dig under them - then lay some more (dig a well)

Use a Deeprock DIY small unit in your basement or garage, with the doors closed.....

I know of one home made bore in a local village the farmer dug down full depth with a JCB then knocked in a 6m length of 3" drill casing that had holes drilled through and the end blanked. 1 1/2" pvc pipe pushed down it with a foot valve on the end, and surface mounted 1.5kw jet pump. That bore will fill a 16,000 litre tank in just over 2 hours.
