Water in fuel

My quad broke down on the way out last night and I ended up having to push it home. I only made it half a mile from the house however so wasn't a bad push.

Two weeks ago, I went to the local filling station and filled two plastic 15ltr fuel containers (Rubbermaid). I filled up my quad with roughly half of one of the cans and ran it for a week. Last night I emptied the remainder of the container into the bike and set off only to break down as above.

Dealer phoned tonight to say there is quite a lot of water in the fuel tank which has caused the problem.

The bike is stored inside at all times and hasn't been in the rain recently.

The second container was emptied into a different bike and has yet to show any trouble although has been laid up for a week. I poured what was left in that container into a jar as below.

Is it possible any water came from the filling station?? Or has anyone had/heard of similar experiences. If not the filling station, where the hell has it come from?

yea u can get water in the fuel from petrol stations there was one near us . after a few complaints most people wouldnt use it after word got round

the fuel stations test and pump out water on a regular basis or at least they should, it comes from condensation

What they said plus modern fuels are hygroscopic (or more than they used to be) thanks to ethanol

So is it feasible? I can't think it has come from anywhere else!

If it's from the garage there will have been a spate of local breakdowns and you will most likely hear about it from someone with the same problem. A local garage used to have the problem after torrential downpours and had to drain and replace quite a few customers fuel in the past.

I was thinking the same. I'll have a word with the owner and as you say if there was a problem, he'll have heard about it by now.

and i bet when u have a word he will say nooooo never had any problems here u probably got the dreggs when his tank was low

filter the fuel you have through a chamois leather, this was a trick used in the early days of motoring to remove water from fuel.

Also a good idea never to buy fuel when the tanker is delivering as this can disturb any water and silt at the bottom of the storage tank.
