There is a chrome rich steel called 3CR12 or 14003 grade which would be ideal for this, its not exactly stainless (well it is, its a ferritic grade) but is very corrosion resistant, up to 250 times more than mild steel, and can be stick welded with stainless electrodes or migged with stainless wire, and is easily worked and painted, I've used it on a few projects over the years including a major extract ducting job for the manufacturer of a well known rubber item that was sold in packs of 3 and was offered at the barbers as "something for the weekend sir?".
