water based varnish?

our stairs hand rail and banister are coated in this.
what is the best over paint so that it doesn't bleed through.

Just done this on a property. Sand it back flat. If it's waterbased it won't take long at all. A coat of Zinsser, then paint of your choice - oil undercoat and semi gloss in this case.

Resist just whacking something on top of it.

is there any knots bleeding through.if there is when you sand it back give the knots a coat of shelac better known as knotting then coat with oil based primer undercoat then whatever you like

thanks for the replies. Zinsser it is. as for knots etc none are weeping.

Would bedec MSP go straight on? I use the satin white on all our whites, whatever it's been done with in the past. Never had any issues with adhesion, bleed through or yellowing.

Bannisters here are done in yellowing water based varnish, which is going to have to be done at some point.

As said, it does rub off quite easily, but it will be a long tedious job on our "Gone with the wind" staircase.

Whatever you do, will need a good rub down first. As most primers seem to be water based these days, I would have thought a coat of this before anything else.

I may buy a new bannister long one.
the landing has short one with spindles in between.
there's 10 spindles so may replace them with new as well as the in between pieces of wood as you can see in the picture.

Replace the lot in a far less awkward to paint style…..light oak and glass would be my choice!

almost done. painted the rails with Zinsser,2 coats .
it was drying out quicker than me putting it on.
when I open the tin,good grief its like water. this is going to take some covering.
needn't worry two coats did it.

Many years ago my parents had exactly that style and setup of stairs and landing etc.

My dad spent over a year painstakingly stripping all the white paint off, at mother’s behest. Stair rails, spindles, doors, frames etc etc And then he varnished it all up.

It looked awful, several different types of wood had been used and it came out in many different shades, once the varnish was on, and mother hated it.
Within a year it was all white again.
