That not unusual I was repairing/servicing access equipment at St Pancras International Train Station when they were rebuilding it, the Plant Operations Manager stated that there was a 10% wastage allowance costed into construction/refurb, total bill at the end of the job 800 million pounds, so 80 million quid approx thrown away or wasted on one job....in 6 years..........

A friend of mine was on a building site for a hospital I think it was & a brand new JCB slipped into the foundations, they tried for half an hour to get it out, then the boss said "bury it" can't hold the job up. its still under the building in the foundations, apparently it was only delivered that morning. It is also rumoured that there is one of those huge BM Volvo earth movers buried under the roundabout at the Chippenham M4 junction. It would not start so it got buried!

There are similar stories about lorries being buried in the Scammonden dam, if they broke down whilst on the dam they just got buried.

I think the reference to contamination was that wrong parts could be put in the box and it returned to stores. They also said that an opened box might contain fewer nuts or washers than on the label and it wouldn't be worth anyone's time to tip them out, count them and rewrite the label. Which is fair enough I suppose.

Rumour also has it that the disused salt mines under Teesside still contain all the trucks, trailers et. used down there. It was closed off some years ago but is reportedly still dry, proposals have been made to use it for dumping nuclear waste.

I was left speechless recently upon a scrapyard find...a full large crate of brandnew metric nuts and bolts of all sizes and many still in there retail boxes. Upon asking the story on there new home i was told it was common from the same company to do this during shelf re-stocking.Anyway allthough i filled the back of my van which made me happy i was not so happy at the waste that had happened and made worse by the fact that there profit on this stuff must be high enough to absorb the disposal. Anyone else seen a crime of this nature??

Quote often an ISO company will buy in bulk for a big job and by the ISO & other rules must have traceability on all the materials used , so to retain stuff left from one or more batches and use it in another could potentially be disastrous if things start to fail .. there will be no easy traceability or path of liability . So out they go, the cost will be factored in on the big job.

Where my pal works they do not have a nut and bolt /fasteners store any more . Every thing is computer ordered & purchased at the design stage for the individual job & is purchased as JUSTIN ( Just in time ) before it reaches the shop floor cutting fabrication stage .
This not only gives the above scenario but also took several store men out the cost equation plus freed up all the storage space these consumables had taken of other non specific job numbered stuff . When you have a job worth a couple of million a few hundredweight of excess nuts bolts fasteners etc. worth a couple of hundred quid is nothing to worry about .

He told me that at first it seemed so stupid , as they'd always carried stock over , but after a while he realised that any court case costs alone beside any compensation or damages for using non traceable parts that failed would massively out weight the disposal of the left overs.

Are there no more firms that buy surplus stock any more? It would make sense for these large companies to give their stuff away to be sold rather than just melt it down again.

When I worked at Longbridge in the 80's we would have parts/materials for up to 6 weeks build on site, now working for Land Rover and we only have a few hours stock. An example is we get a delivery of seats approx once an hour 24 hours a day, the supplier even has to load the lorry in the correct order as once the trailer has docked it is unloaded automatically and delivered by conveyors to trackside ready to be fitted to the correct car.

Can't see that being true at all due to building regs fuel, oils, and acid not to mention possible problems with the building in the future, probably one of those rumours that snowballs

This was a good few years ago, before the days of anyone worrying about disposal of oils etc. but as you say, these these stories grow as time goes on

yeah usually the news papers for exaggerating things, saw one a couple of winters ago with a story saying a really bad winter was on its way and driving conditions would be terrible, turned out its sponsor was tyre company

I can see a situation whereby it might happen: a convoy of concrete trucks on their way, the cost of a specialist crane and a foreman who's p¡ssed off a digger fell into 'his' work area. Having said that, photos or it didn't happen
