waste oil heater!

Hi guys, this is a new idea from the ones i posted in the brew room about workshop heating and space heaters costing a fortune to run. So i hear these waste oil heaters burn really clean and heat up a building better than a wood stove. My question is has anyone made there own and got good results or has anyone made one of these ?

oil burner

i made a waste oil burner out of a scrap fire box. drips on to a saucepan, fed from a tank outside the building. it gets so hot the whole thing turns cherry red, and the other day i melted a load of wiring which was too near the fire. its fierce, thank god my brothers an electrician as it put the whole farm out. my mate attempted one like in your picture and couldn't get good results.

So what type of system seems to be popular ? as i see some being made of propane cylinders and what sort of setup is required?

My first thought was some cheeky git is flogging a set of plans that he's ripped off of Roger's website, I then looked at Roger's site and he's now selling the plans rather than giving them away. Glad I copied his website when it was free

I'll have a trawl through my harddisc if anyone is interested, I haven't made one yet but I will in the next few months.

I've tried a few of the drip feed types and found them very fussy to get right, then I tried a Babington and can't fault it. Tons of heat, burns nearly 2 gallons per hour flat out, melts aluminium and most importantly burns smokeless from the start, working out how to make one fully automatic to heat the house now.

You need a licence to operate a waste oil burner, and any you do install has to be of an approved type.

Not sure if that applies here and when I install one at home no one will be able to tell it's not a kerosene type

I would add that I have no intention whatsoever of building such a device, and my interest is purely acedemic. That Babington burner looks a cracking piece of kit doesn't it?

Don't forget to think about a solenoid & flame failure device.... or you might get nightmares about having a big puddle of unburnt oil like we did years ago .

When I was a little boy( 1958 ) Dennis Scott a former RAF Lancaster aero mechanic had a drip oil burner in his six car mechanics garage. It dripped warmed used engine oil on a plate and got it flaring like mad with a similar arangement dripping water at a different rate on the burning oil plate .

Hell of a machine used to glow red hot .. he'd put a engraved plate at the back of the lever taps so he could easily and quickly set the ratios for the levels of burning / heat output..

He had to let the old oil settle out , so for most of the year he had numerous cans of dirty oil standing behind his garage.

Come early Nov he would start the hand pumping with a hand gear oil pump the settled out oil 14 feet up in to a raised 45 gallon header tank with a big 2 inch glass sight glass on the side.
Every Saturday it was my fiirst job to bring settled cans of old oil in on the sack barrow and do the pumping to the header tank .

I've got the guts from a couple of old but working home kerosene burners so that gives me oil pumps, opto sensors, high voltage spark unit, and solenoid so hopefully get it all together and working soon.

that licence is about £120 per year, i think you only pay it if you burn oil youve bought

Lovely job mate, what did you use for the babington tip and what size did you drill the air outlet and oil outlet?

Ok so how about a woodburner, would it heat a large building up? And what would be hotter a 47kg gas bottle one or a wood burner made professionly with a output of 11kw?

I use a pot-bellied stove to burn wood.and to get full heat out I'm constantly stoking it. OK if you're sat at home watching the telly, but inconvenient when you're working.

You can store more energy with oil in terms of Kw-Hr/cu metre of storage.

Wood smoke smells nicer though!

Its not as simple as that - depends on the flue setup, baffles, fuel, air provision, throttle, etc etc. A 'proper' one with a backboiler running radiators around the workshop is better. You don't get just one hot area then. Possibly a hot air fan etc.

Lovely job mate, what did you use for the babington tip and what size did you drill the air outlet and oil outlet?

What kind of air pressure do you run?

The tip is a 50mm door handle from Homebase with a .5mm hole drilled in the centre, to start it the air is at about 10psi and then when it warms up turn it up to 40 psi. The oil is fed from a 8mm copper pipe with the end slightly flattened and a tap on it to adjust the flow.
That one is gone to the Russian mechanics next door to me now and I'm starting on one for myself today. It's going to be a "bit" bigger . I'll get pics and start another thread later, hope it might help others interested in building one.

I was goinfg to build a babbington but never got around to it.
Looks trick to set up, and you need to drill that really itsy hole.
Drip ones seem a lot simpler, my narrow boat had a drip fed stove and it worked well.

Could you just use a mig tip, I often use them when I need a small orifice.
