It’s not meant to be. Technically, I would use the word “theft”. I assume they eventually get chased to replace the stuff, but it keeps the money in the private companies bank that little bit longer.

The per capita (i.e. per person) spend on the NHS is not especially high on figures published. The UK is about 16th in rank order of spending amongst "developed" nations. IMO the "Affordability" of the NHS is largely a political issue, in that it's politicians who decide the annual budget. Some politicians seem to take much more of an interest in NHS services when there's a general election looming.

Just like to point out T1 diabetes is an auto-immune illness, and not a "lifestyle condition" like T2. There is a slight increase in T1 incidence rates, but there is no definitive answer as to why - there's not even a lot of understanding of what triggers the auto-immune response in the first place.
I was thinking exactly the same thing. You can't group those who have developed an auto immune disease with those who are ill because they are fat and lazy.

Yes and that's precisely why I mentioned them separately in the total costs...they are indeed not the same. T1 rates are not really changing....but T2 rates are expected to change quiet substantially over the next 20 years....the potential NHS costs are quite eye watering.
The conferences I've seen the projected cost is expected to double....no idea if that will happen but that is the expectation!
Usually the NHS would be able to soak these costs up but the demographic changes basically means there are fewer young people (ageing population).
Its a perfect storm....but has been predicted for decades!

I agree that T2 is heavily influenced by lifestyle choices not everyone has this condition through the choices they make. I'm diabetic, over weight and haven't done much exercise in the past. I'm int he care of a good team of doctors at the hospital. While not not looking after myself hasn't helped this isn't really a big factor in getting the condition. It just makes it worse. Going to the hospital and knowing other folk. There are plenty of thin otherwise healthy persons (whom regularly exercise) who suffer with this condition much worse than I do. Certain groups of people are genetically disposed to experience this irrespective of any lifestyle choices

the alternative is worse. you see it in america where things like search and rescue have to be paid for,people will let what would have been a reasonably easy rescue become a life or death situation because they cant afford to pay

I'm happy with the NHS...the idea of free healthcare for all is a truly great idea.
What threatens the NHS as I said before is demographics....ageing population means more treatment costs and fewer younger tax payers to pay for those costs (double edged sword really)....this is already a huge problem without other issues like obesity and antibiotic resistance.
I think I'll just go and stick my head in a bucket of sand and just hope for the best....wonder if someone will read this post in 20 years and wonder why we did nothing when the issues were so clear!

It’s not really unique to the NHS though, the same problems exist (if not worse) in America where it’s pretty much universally private healthcare.

Thing is, the USA has an absolute bare minimum free health care system, and an ‘insurance premium’ paid for health insurance, with a growing population who cannot afford the premiums, end up going bankrupt due to medical costs, and STILL suffer from all those things you mention, which are very much not uncommon over there.

Dads just added a bit of storage to his workshop courtesy of the NHS renovating an intensive care unit:
Nine mint condition cupboards and accompanying worktop, I believe someone he works with is having a load too, I've got about twentieth dibs.
A few have very sturdy plastic bins in as shelf/drawer type things too. All destined for the skip otherwise!
