ex beekeepr here.....avg 25 hives and anything upto 2 tons of honey....every year...
the euro hornets are no trouble at all......
if ur interested they go to outside lights at night coz thats where the moths are.....bit like Mc Donalds for Hornets....
a very interesting subject Asian hornets if ur interested....they were in S.France years ago.....ask me how I know.....my bees were terrified.....they never worked the same after that....
to kill wasps with no toxic or inflamable liquids a stong solution of tap water and washing up liquid does the job....we have a 2gallon garden pump up sprayer just for that job....
I did a couple of days with a gov bee inspector....to kill a notifible infected hive.....very early first thing, block the entrance lift the lid and drop in a cup of petrol....instant death..very sad.....

It is true that wasps are an absolute pain.
They're agressive, nasty little bu**ers, who don't have a single nice
gene in their body, unlike bees and hornets who, generally, are happy
to co-exist peacefully with us.
However, they are pollinators also and probably provide an important
link in the eco-system.
Whilst I used to think that the world would be a better place, if it were
to be eradicated of wasps, I know feel that I've had to re-assess that
idea. However hard it is.
It's a bit like flies - in recent years, it seems that because everyone was
quite happily killing as many as possible (albeit understandably), their
population has actually started diminishing and has become an issue
of concern. Although no-one really likes flies, they, too, perform an
important role.
It's a bit of a dilemma, because if I try to take the wider view, then I
think I should reflect before killing a wasp. But, on the other hand, I'm
still firmly in the camp of "the only good wasp is a dead wasp".
If only we could teach them to be a little nicer and tolerant...

Very true @frank horton
European hornets are generally very docile, despite their intimidating looks.
But, the Asian hornets are really quite aggressive.
Perhaps their progression into this part of the world is another sign of a
shifting climate ? If that is so, we're probably going to have to start getting
used to their presence
When i had my large workshop on the farm springtime would always produce a fair few queen wasps looking for a home. I had a large Sievert propane torch with high pressure regulator attached & found it excellent for shooting them down, light torch & small flame comes out, pull trigger & it was like an afterburner on a jet. I cant use it in my home workshop as its too small & i would burn it down for sure.
As for the asian hornets 72 nests were destroyed last year in Kent. So there will be more.
A dog walker got badly stung in the woods near here last summer when they disturbed a Hornets nest, wasnt said if they were asian or european hornets. Either way not a recomended experience!

I'm prone to agree on that front. However, I've only ever been stung once by a wasp, & I think running the lawnmower over their underground hive & entrance could be what one might call being a nuisance to them.
We have several nests yearly here, & I've, touch wood, never had one sting me at home, as yet, even though some do make their way into the flat.

We had an enormous wasps nest hanging from the eaves of one of our buildings the other year, quire terrifying! Fortunately we have a bee keeper who keeps his hives on the farm in exchange for controlling pests (rats, mice wasps etc) and he sorted it out calmly and efficiently. (A long telescopic tube up which he discharged some noxious substance into it). As he pointed out, that impressive structure is entirely built of wood that they've chewed off things such as my window frames and roof joists before regurgitating it.
Absolutely this. Anyone who grown flowers or veg will tell you that wasps are a very good thing. They eat a lot of pests in the garden.

Year before last the garage was a no go zone as there was a big nest. Don't think they'll come back this year as I've disconnected the SWA from the house so they won't have any lights or power. I'm stuffed if they've got head torches...

yep a teaspoon full of cymagMy Grandad used to keep bees. But he also used to remove any wasp nests. I am sure he used cyanide. Obviously before elf and safety.
We loved it as we were guaranteed a couple days decent fishing using the grub.
used to drop it in rabbit warrens as well and gas themdunno if that was a quicker death than ferreting with nets shooting or let the dog on them or stretch there necks

Your asking for grief if a wasps nest over winters as the wasps will chew the rafters & trusses up to get wood pulp for the ever growing nest. The biggest overwintered nest I dealt with was 8 feet long going back in the slope of the roof gor six feet , frontal height over four feet high and full of dozens of breeding queens , they got winter food from the kitchens & waste food bins .
They were able to overwinter due to the place being an old folks home constantly at 22 oC and situated in the middle of acres and acres of fruit farms and orchards .
I had to get a scaffolding company bring me a load of Acro jacks and scaff boards so I could support the ceiling area of the dining room where the majority of the nest was .
The timber of the roof trusses by the tiles was chewed away to about 1/3 of the original truss and the rafter part had the plaster board nails & screws poking up through the remaining 1/2" of wood . It took two days to sort it , then the builders came in and re roofed & re ceiling it .
It was easy money for two days hot work and well rewarded .
I used a case of 12 Johnson & Johnson's black aerosol wasp killer , poked a 3 mtr long 15 mm copper tube with soldered up pointed end and a few 1/8 in holes in the last foot by the point into the nest ., taped several of the aerosols in a bin bag to the tube then exhausted the aerosols into the bag and gently squeezed the bag flat to pump the wasp killer deep into the nest in different places . Just before I finished up on the first day I taped a home made grenade lever to the side of two can so they were permanently on spray & tossed them into the roof void before replacing the lid . Next morning there were buckets of dead wasps to vacuum up and nine big black bin bags of nest to get rid of in my farms incinerator .

The hornet that stung our old fella on the eyebrow wasn’t that friendly…… wouldn’t have been a tremendous issue apart from he was a linesman for the leccy board at the time and was at the top of a pylon

A friend of mine in Sweden regularly has hornets nesting in his attic and he just leaves them to get on with it. Never been stung either, he says they're really not aggressive.
