Wasps Nest

Found this today in one of my sheds
One big wasp was ocupying it .
They don't like brake cleaner at all .
Hope I did the right thing .
Bees are different

ive polly bagged a few up and shot a bit of petrol in .it instantly dispatches them

Or Asian hornet, nasty burggers.

Spherical with a small entrance hole at the base, usually 5 to 10 cm in diameter. Built in spring by a lone Asian hornet queen, usually in a protected place such as brambles, a hedgerow, or in / on a building

Oh tiny one. I had this in the attic in August 2021. Foto is a bit blurry, but it was about 50cm diameter and a very large population inside.
Even the exterminator was impressed.

A couple of years ago we paid for a wasp nest to be sorted , how much !
I've since "manned up" : got a bee suit some wasp powder and found another use for me welding gloves . Saved a few quid already .

Last one I had in my garage was dealt with via the blowtorch, can't fly can't sting.

compressed air parafin gun with extended nylon pipe on poke it in and pull the trigger sorts them

That is a Hornet nest. Looks like a big wasp, yellow. Asian Hornets are orange. Wasps nest look scaly or flaky.

Hornets are not interested in your jam sandwiches or beer, they eat insects. They seldom sting unless you attack the nest. They have a bad rep really. The only time they are a problem, is in the evening. They are attracted to light, so come in when you have the windows open.
We had a nest in our outside toilet a couple of years ago. Started another one earlier this year, but abandoned it for some reason. They look bloody scary though.

The workers become a nuisance at the end of summer when all larvae have hatched and they're out of work. Then they start looking for sweet stuff. Don't know if the same applies to hornets.

My wife was a pest control officer for a local council years ago & got a lot of wasp nest jobs. When that council contracted it out & got rid of her job she moved to food safety. So in one fell swoop she changed from the person everybody wanted to see to the person they didnt!
We still have her wasp nest puffer & use it several times a year with problem nests.
As far as Hornets go the Asian ones are quite dark with one orange segment on their abdomen, European ones are larger & more wasp like. They tend to be more docile but pack a fearsome sting. Last wasp nest i did was down the yacht club. Interestingly while watching it a large dark coloured hornet turned up & landed next to the nest It was unmistakeably one of the Asian variety & took off across the creek towards the woods. I reported it.
It looks like we may have more soon.

Try going to Austria. We had to have pint glasses to drown the wasps. They only drank beer from small glasses.

No way could you drink from a can as it would be full in seconds of wasps.

I get wasps in the loft every year. I leave them alone, and they leave us alone.
It’s a tricky one, because I know wasps can be a nuisance, but we wouldn’t have this discussion if it were bees.

Pretty disconcerting when in a tight crawl space and there's a nest. True works of art some though.

Had one they built in a hung up, zipped up coat in our old stable. Filled up the body and down the sleeves.

Luckily we know an apiarist who will deal with wasps too.

(An aside, as bees, but a neighbour had honey dripping out of his soffit boards which was a bit surreal).
