I stand corrected. For some reason, I thought they were a non-stinger. It appears some are stingless, but queens & workers can sting.

Red arsed bumble bees can sting, a mate of mine sat on one and reckoned it was really bad. As far as wasps go if you need them gone sharpish you are best to get someone in. My wife was Rochford councils pest control officer for about 6 years & did hundreds of wasps nests. Always best to do it at night when they have all gone home & are inside. She used a puffer with permethrin powder (same as ant powder) puffer has extendable nozzles, I made a couple of long nozzles so you could get at nests from the ground or top floor windows. One application is usually enough to kill a nest.

I have a healthy respect for wasps following an incident back in 74, summer hols a bunch of kids out for a mooch, we go down the square pond & see a wasps nest in the bank of the pond. We all start chucking mud at it from the other side of the pond, As you do!.
The wasps start getting areated but cant see where the mud is coming from.
Then half an hour later George turns up late cos he has been to the dentist, he shouts "what are you throwing mud at?" & approaches the nest, we warn him to stay away but its too late. He gets about 3 ft away & the wasps erupt en masse like a firehose of enraged demons. Fortunately he is the other side of the pond so we have a head start on him & the wasps. George was a fast runner but he wasnt fast enough & got a proper pasting, they chased him & us for a quarter of a mile & he was stung many times at least 50 maybe more. We were picking them out of his hair & his head swole up something awful. He was nearly blind & had to be rushed to hospital where he was kept in overnight.
The noise of the angry wasps & his screams was something none of us will ever forget.

Bit late in the year for wasp problems, we’ve had a couple of nests at home & some white wasp powder that looks like talcum powder sorts them out. Spray adhesive is effective short term, spray that into the nest entrance & the solvent drugs them. This assumes you can get close enough to administer it though.

It's an old thread, but wasps are a recurring problem, so I suspect that this thread might rise from the dead from time to time.

I used the spray from screw fix (£10)...it did an excellent job. The foam is very accurate....it shoots about 4m so you don't need to get too close at all and it basically smothers the entire nest.

I did have a raiding party attempt an emergency takeoff as the ordnance was incoming on the nest but I was easily able to take them down without any bother at all with a bit of well directed anti aircraft fire.

As above...most will die off over the winter if you can wait a few months.
