Yup used to use one at my Gran's as a nipper. Nowt as posh as that copper one though, more like the wooden one on the left here:

A lot of washers are sealed plastic outer drums now, with mine i cut the casing fitted bearings and plastic welded the drum togetherMy washer's an Ariston 6Kg 1400rpm spin that I bought new for £250 in 2005. It lasted 2 years and then started making a godawful rumbling noise. Stripped it down, sure enough the front spindle bearing had disintegrated. Tried to get a new bearing and seal but was told by the local 'specialist' that I had to buy an entire half-drum - for £200! He shrugged and said that two years for a £250 washer was about right in the average family house - I pointed out there were just two of us
Washer makers are crafty and use seals made to odd dimensions so you can't just get them from a bearing/ seal supplier, but the bearings themselves on this one were off the shelf sizes. I bought rubber-sealed ones, refitted the original shaft seal as it looked undamaged and the washer is still going 8 years on![]()
are you sure you didn't have a cylinder head or similar in it when it went with all that damageBringing back the old thread
Our 18 year old Bosch went big time yesterday. First time it broke down and it made sure it wasn't coming back.
I think the electric motor went + the bearing feeling the movement of the drum along with what little was holding the concrete blocks down + a small fire in the controller, oh and not forgetting the door broke at the same time and opened with all the water in it!! Huge noise when it went along with it smashing around against the work unit, the fire in the control panel I assume was the reason the electrics tripped out in the house
I'm surprised it didn't break the work top the way it smashed around in it's position. Shook a lot of rust off pity you can't do that with cars to remove the rust.

Our maybe 10 year old electrolux/zanussi has been making rumblings for a few months now. Wondering whether I ought to attempt to replace the bearings being as I've never been inside a washer before. Or just buy a new high capacity washer.
