Burls are the growths on the exterior. They are essentially a tumor on the trunkMake sure it's not a Burr Walnut they're worth a small fortune.
Got these rounds of Yew, they are about 800mm (ish) in diameter.
Been sat in the barn drying for at least 8 years
Need to find something to do with them

You'd walk funny for weeks if you did ! If you're lucky the burrs will get over grown and sealed within the tumour as the tree keeps growing in both wood & the tumour skin making a lovely solid lump of useable wood that is well though of & highly sought after .Burls are the growths on the exterior. And this why burls are so damn expensive a lucky phenomenon. If you're lucky the burrs will get over grown and sealed within the tumour as the tree keeps growing in both wood & the tumour skin making a lovely solid lump of useable wood that is well though of & highly sought after .

Buy or scrounge old damages veneered furniture .Fwiw @Screwdriver , I’ve learnt lot’s of interesting stuff about walnut from this thread
At some point, hopefully I will have time to play with wood, but until then these threads are great for “general knowledge” for me

Dig a saw pitHaha, yeah thanks. You and me both. It is a LOT of wood to recover any interesting pieces from but we all have to start somewhere. Rather practice on this than a more valuable piece. Even though this is somewhat disappointing, I'm still going to be careful how I approach it.
I don't see any way I can introduce it to the bandsaw (or the vertical bandsaw) without first slicing it up a bit. I may just attack it with a chainsaw free hand and see what I end up with but would much prefer to at least have the option of getting a couple of long planks out of the big bit.
decisions, decisions...

You need one straight edge at the start, whatever you decide to do.
If you can create this on the wood itself, by whatever means, go for it, but another way I'd to affix the stock to a plank that has a straight edge.
You then use the plank edge to follow the fence on your saw and the blade cuts straight lines in your stock.
You don't need to sacrifice anything.
Affix your stock to a plank.
Flatten the edge of your stock.
Remove plank, and flip, using your new flat face against the fence.
No planks harmed during the exercise.

If it’s just you lot then I’m not going to that party, lolI'm sure yew'll think of something...
800mm, that'd make a huge bowl to chuck the car keys in at one of your evening soirées!![]()

Tempting…….Sausage fest!
At one such party I innocently went to , they used the biggest ladies upper deckker flopper stopper because of the size of the cups as it hung from one of the reinforced chandeliers.I'm sure yew'll think of something...
