If you're lucky the burrs will get over grown and sealed within the tumour as the tree keeps growing in both wood & the tumour skin making a lovely solid lump of useable wood that is well though of & highly sought after .

I ended up with a whole pack of sycamore burls veneer its lovely and when I have enough time will veneer our jukebox. If I can remember how, that was a long time ago when I was taught.

Soak the veneer off or use steamed cloths with a steam iron , slowly & gently peel them off once the glue has softened enough , carefully wipe off all traces of glue with a warm damp cloth that you keep rinsing through & wringing out , iron them under brown parcel paper on the wrong side to get them flat & store flat some where dry and cool between bits of hardboard.
T'is a very cheap way of getting some really old book matched veneers especially off old wardrobes & side boards .

Haha, yeah thanks. You and me both. It is a LOT of wood to recover any interesting pieces from but we all have to start somewhere. Rather practice on this than a more valuable piece. Even though this is somewhat disappointing, I'm still going to be careful how I approach it.
I don't see any way I can introduce it to the bandsaw (or the vertical bandsaw) without first slicing it up a bit. I may just attack it with a chainsaw free hand and see what I end up with but would much prefer to at least have the option of getting a couple of long planks out of the big bit.

You need one straight edge at the start, whatever you decide to do.
If you can create this on the wood itself, by whatever means, go for it, but another way I'd to affix the stock to a plank that has a straight edge.
You then use the plank edge to follow the fence on your saw and the blade cuts straight lines in your stock.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, I can sacrifice a couple of 4x2s and while the cut won't be ideal, at least I can slice them up while it's green. Plus I'll be able to move/store it a lot easier.
I'm still deciding which way to "flatten" the bend on the big bit. Probably best to try and keep the thickest section of heart wood. I think that means cut it with the ends up, flatten them off, then turn it over and flatten off the bulge in the middle.
OTOH, to keep it as wide as possible, I cut the bend to give me smiley wood from which I might even do a table top sort of like this ) (
Like a live edge X shape. Bit ambitious for a first project but I only get one shot and I really ought to finish off the rebar bending, post leg vice thing.
<edit> I also need to restore a larger chainsaw which has a long enough bar for the job. The longer bar I have (off an old 031AV) doesn't fit my "little" MS210.

There are things that attach to domestic bandsaws for doing veneers that grip the wood, and then have some sort of linear rail thing (ie the straight edge) to pass the wood through on the "carriage".
Theyre American, big money, and beyond the scope of this, however, looking up some youtube ads for them may give you ideas.
I think it may just be called "gripper" or something but bandsaw+veneer+gripper will, im sure, give you some pointers.

I can't get it up onto or anywhere near a bandsaw so I would be using the 4x2s as a sacrificial guide when running a chainsaw along them...
They will most definitely be in harms way!
