Walnut Blasting.

Interested an any ideas to keep the mess down when Walnut Blasting my rear car suspension beam.

Was thinking of a Gazebo with sides and some floor dust sheets?.

I have a P3 mask but trying to avoid covering our garden and next doors in dust!.

I've got a bead blasting cabinet to convert for small bits but can't fit a beam in there..

I wouldnt have thought walnut shells are abrasive enough for that, they are probably breaking up too quick hence the dust, grit would be better?

I've got most of the paint off with Roloc discs, just need to get into the awkward bits really.

Will se how it goes on the beam, most other stuff is engine related and didn't want to shot blast that really.

crushed glass is good but not beads still a mess business though

I've not had a go a blasting yet, just pre-planning for weekend!.

You need a blasted or etched finish to get the paint to stick as well as possible.
A sharp abrasive (crushed glass, j blast, garnet, chilled iron etc) will leave a far better surface for paint with the added advantage of working far quicker.
A polished or peened surface is the last thing you want.

The grit shouldn't be too hard to contain when blasting a beam.
With harder grit you make less dust.

I did a rear frame outside with just some corrugated plastic sheets and was able to sweep up most of the spent grit.

Thanks @Exuptoy Nearly there with this bit but every time I think I'm finished a I find something else! But it's good to finally say enough is enough and get some paint on. Any job is better than getting underseal off, a bit of welding is quite therapeutic.

A cheap gazebo would work even better.
I've used the Argos ones with only a roof and made sides out of Terram geofabric.
They also works well as a make shift spray booth.

I used a pop up toilet tent for blasting in, it kept most of the dust local

I've got a cheap Gazebo you can have if you are anywhere near Frome?
It's a pop-up type, a few of the plastic bits on the frame are broken but replacements are cheap enough. I was going to 3d print some once I got the hang of printing tpu...
I expect you could hold it up with cable ties for one job though.
Also got side panels with windows so would be light enough in there.

Another option would be just to drape the whole car with sheet and hold it down on the ground with something. Use the car as the tent roof as it were..

I've already got a cheap Gazebo, going to strap some dust sheets to it (hopefully not too windy!).

The beam is off the car in back garden.

Will have a go with the Walnut and scuff it up best as possible before painting.
