Walkway

A little mild steel job this week for a change, customer needs a walkway to span these cables in a roofspace above a food factory, at the moment they have to walk on the cables to enter the roof space not really a good idea,


Access is very tight so the job is made to bolt together, there's deliberately no mid rail in the handrail to allow access to a control cabinet just out of camera shot.


And just for you mig-weld fetishists a couple of the welds, Its made from 40 x 40 x 3 SHS, with a 2mm aluminium deck pop riveted on

Na, its got 3 cross bars under it, the 2mm was in stock so used it up, it'll only be used about a couple of times a month.

Was thinking the same thing Always makes me laugh when you work in a supposedly clean food factory and end up grubbier than you would in the workshop.

Very nice Paul. Those little foot tabs look handy, did you make them yourself. I probably spend about half my time making silly little bits like that (tabs, brackets etc)...

And stick, and oxy acetylene processes as well. when I learned the trade you wouldn't be allowed to call yourself a welder unless you could do all of them.

We've three to do next week. Similar size. 150*50*10 PFC where you have 40mm SHS. Talk about over engineering! I'll stick some pics up when they are made as a comparison!

Actually yes, over the course of 4 or five years you would cover just about everything, forge welding, resistance welding, hard surfacing, soldering and brazing even riveting, all in all a thorough grounding, including the theory to back it all up.
Every day there's something new to learn though, you never know it all, and tend to forget stuff that you don't use regularly, that's what makes the job interesting.

...it never fails to delight me; how the ratio of welding (or any other) "well done" jobs are approx. 95% prep & 5% welding. It's a dead give-away about the values of the maker. I love looking at fabrications with good prep!

Taking my time with prep is almost "all the joy", right there (for me).

Out of our 25+ production mig welders (and I use the term loosely ) only one of them can use stick and tig, some of the worst can't even set up a mig welder!

The most stupid reply i had lately was someone saying my kit wasn't tuned correctly, when actually i was welding in spray!wtf... talk about transfer modes and they look at you with kind of a blank expression on their face!!!!!!! too late....you got me started now....
