In a bit of a mini dilema. I've been dreaming of building my very own haynes roadster for about 2 years (aka Locost - see Uncle Fista's project) and I've finally bought my first house last month WITH a garage. I've finally got the space to consider undertaking the project but I've been looking at buying a welder for about 6 months.
Having spoken with weldequip, I'm pretty much set on a clarke 160te with a few other bits (I originally wanted the 151te but the 160 works out better value). The total for the welder, an autohelmet, a disposable regulator & 4 disposable canisters works out between 350 & 400 quid so it's quite an outlay.
I went to see a friends locost project which is pretty much finished and I was totally blown away. He sent me a cheeky text the other day - something along the lines of "check this out *ebay auction number* - oops shouldnt really be sending you messages like this right before xmas!"... it was only a 2nd hand welder for ridiculous money. Now, I've heard alsorts of horror stories about cheap/nackered/2nd hand kit giving crap welds and not really being a good idea - but would I be able to pick up a decent 2nd hand mig welder with a similar power output?
If I could go cheaper but still have the reliability, I'd do it in a heartbeat since I'm desperate to get the ball rolling. However, buying new will include the support from the likes of weldequip and warranty etc. Advice welcome & I'm still leaning towards brand new kit, but it will just take a bit longer to get there.
Thanks in advance
