I guess I like VWs. Always have, actually. My friend Don has this 2002 Jetta that he got for his daughter a few years ago and asked me if I would take a look at it. It had a misfire. probably a coil, I thought.
yeah, that and a broken exhaust valve. It was time to make a decision. It could have gone either way as it desperately needed a timing belt/tensioner/water pump/thermostat, a new CV axle inner boot, 3 coolant hoses, head gasket, cylinder head work (minor) which involved resurfacing the base and valve seat, and a few other minor items.
The exhaust will need to be patched and Im going to weld a new section in as well as fix a bracket or two up by the motor. The brackets should only need minor repair.
Heres the reason for no compression in cylinder 2!
and the cylinder head removed and cleaned up a bit. The head is now at the machine shop where it has been resurfaced to remove all the gasket impressions and minor pitting here and there. It never overheated, so it was very straight.
I love a new pile of parts!
The tensioner for the timing belt was so loose I dont know how on earth the belt didnt jump a tooth. almost everything I have taken off the car has given its all and is ready for replacement.
The water pump impeller was just starting to show signs of minor cracking...glad we opted for a new one which has an improved metal impeller.
here it is installed.
the thermostat housing was just starting to leak at the o-ring.
the block's surface where the it mounts needed major clean up. here it is painted with some primer. (thats just a rag pushed inside the opening to keep the overspray out...
I bought an injector cleaner/tester. I had to make up a connection jumper from crimp terminals that fit the injectors. I was excited to try it out. Several tests on each one eventually yielded good results and cleanly spraying injectors. they all work fine now.
The dipstick tube shattered into pieces when I tried to remove it. It was already cracked and leaking, not helping the car run well, Im sure. heres a nice new one!
The CV axle boot was ripped in two places right clear through and flinging grease all over the place. Luckily, the joint was not compromised and so a new boot and some fresh grease did the trick. man is that a messy job!
and put back together
The outer end needed some touch up...actually, it was pretty rusty, so it got treated to some smoothing priming and satin black finish
and that is where we are for now. the machine shop is going to be finished next week. I am hoping to get as much done as possible in preparation for when the head comes back.
thanks for lookin!
