VW crankshaft wear ?

Well the engine case was just picked up after being line bored and i am so glad wd paid an extra £20 to have it chemically cleaned

£120 or there abouts plus bearings and some spare push rods soon got that all up to £240 with Boris's bonus on top.

Well we got some more time in on this engine today and it is mainly back together, the only thing now is the oil pump which seems ok apart from some scoring on the cover plate but i have fixed the scoring before by adding a stainless steel sheet under the cover, not sure how many people have done this but my beetle did 30,000 miles before the next rebuild using that trick/bodge.

I notice you haven’t refitted the flywheel yet so assume you still have to set the crank end float?

How does align boring work on a split case VW? So you nip a bit off each case and true up the main bearing saddles but how does that work with the gearbox register and locating dowels?

Not sure how it's done now but it used to be done with the case together not split in two?

The case is joined in the video i watched the it was in a jig and a big reamer looking thing was put in it

I realise the cases need to be together to align bore, what I was getting at was the mating surfaces of the two cases would need to have something taken off them before align boring to give them something to machine unless they are using a bigger OD main bearing. If they have munched a bit off the casings to do this the register for the gearbox is going to be out of shape (no longer circular) and the locating dowels will be tight in the gearbox.

Ok i get you now, the mating faces stay the same it is just the bits where the cranks sits that are made bigger and then you fit bearings with an oversized outer size and inner size aswell if the crank has had a grind, hope i explained that better

The place that did the line bore send the case back and the VW place got the bearings in for us, we did check the numbers on the box though and the bearings were Silverline and Mahle

I remember my wife's Beetle crank had a bit of end float when we checked it.
About 10mm!
One of the valve guides was also bobbing up and down with the valve too, it still ran ok unbelievably!
We got a reconditioned lump from a VW place on the A1/A41 in Highgate, Volksworld I think it was called.

Well the engine is all back together and after turning over on a drill and making sure the oil pressure was up we installed it and turned it over o the starter and as soon as the coil was connected it burst into life.

Bet it suffers with the carb icing up , there’s no carb warm air pick up , it was a common problem
