VW caddy van Diesel...

Seriously looking at a Caddy van......
as far as I know there are two engines....1,6....2,0.....
any bad experiences with those engines.....what years to avoid........
I dont need performance, just a plodder......
It'll be a 5 seater with windows.....
my T4 is, 1.9TD with 440,000klms on it with no maj probs.......
we just need something easier to park in town.....so a spare vehicle really......max yearly klms would be less than 5,000........

My passat has a 1.6 tdi engine & I had an injector go down, but quite common & AA carry spares nowadays for most vehicles. Only other problem I have had is water ingress into ecu, wich is located under the windscreen in scuttle panel so if you do get one I would look atmaking a cover to go over top of it & ensure drains areclear of debris. Cost me about £460 formy codes to be copied across onto a replacement ecu. Main dealer ecu costs £2k

If it’s the same 1.6 I’ve got in my wife’s Golf you’ll get better economy out of the 2litre

the girlfriends 2008 caddy is the 1.9tdi, supposedly not the strongest of the 1.9's but its just under 200k miles and still runs great,
you also get the Sdi , thats the non turbo 1.9d, likely wouldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding, but apparently extremely reliable!
if you go for a slightly newer one, try and get one that hasnt had the emissions recall as they can be much worse on fuel!

1.6's suffer with injectors - EGR coolers - oil pumps & oil pump drive wet belt - leaks from plastic crankshaft seal housing behind cambelt

A mate hand one of the naturally aspirated ones for work ….. his words ……. If you had to pull out on to a dual carriageway or a fast stretch you had to take your own life in your hands and hope for the best

They lots better than the newish DV5 1.5 diesel fitted into Fords/Peugeots/Citroens and Fiats (and other stuff).

I got a 69 plate Vauxhall Vivaro Lite van in my yard with 77k on the clock - with one of these DV5 engines in it - and it has exploded.

The "thinking man" will buy a petrol from now on...

Had a 1.9 ~2010 for a bit. Was fine engine wise, except the vacuum reservoir (built into the rocker cover?!) failed, which took a bit of diagnosing. Not painfully slow, but certainly not fast. Was pretty under tuned at ~100 hp iirc.

DMF was a bit suspect.

The LWB is a good compromise between decent load space and sensible parking. The SWB ones are smaller than many competitors of that size though.

If a cambelt comes off a SDi one - you just buy another belt and put it back on!

Mines a 2012 1.6 tdi common rail & I think i`m right that the oil pumps are gear driven so don`t suffer from oil pump issue. Got 239k on mine now & hoping to get to 300k mark as I regularly service it.

The 1.6 tdi and it's injector issues are imho grossly exaggerated.
I have swapped mine all 4 about 80k km ago, one failed,I bit the bullet and replaced them all 4.
For the rest it has been trouble free (have it chipped to 140 hp, and I drive it quite spirited)
Still on the clutch that wa sin it when I bought it with 70k km on the clock, now at 230k

Yes you hear about them failing, but for the one that you hear about there are literally 100's of these engines just plodding along without any problems.
The 2.0 is a more powerful engine, but the 1.6 when chipped is way more rev happy then the 2.0.
Stock (75bhp) both the 1.6 and the 2.0 are woefully slow, overtaking on a b road is asking for trouble, a tune gives it way more oomph, so overtaking a tractor is now easy.

I think the problem with this type of stacked injector is - they fail at so low mileages.

We seen them fail electronically at sub 30.000miles at my workshop. Just misfire when cold or just stop pulsing.

Most other types of injector get to 100.000miles plus and start overfueling.

Recon stacked injectors are not a good idea or very reliable. So it is new and they cost good money....

Not perse a year, but a suffix.
Suffix B are the good ones.
I do believe the suffix B injectors were initially made by Bosch, whereas the failing older ones were made by Continental.
But Continental has also fixed the problem, so a B suffix one made by Continental is as good as a B suffix one made by Bosch
