Vw caddy cv issues

Afternoon gents ,I’ve got an 08 VW Caddy , and I’ve just replaced the right outer cv joint , new boot , greased etc . As it the boot was shot and full of crud .

Now , when ever I turn right at a slowish speed , as if going round a roundabout , in 2nd gear for example , I get a rumbling grinding sound . This is purely on right turn only . And when at speed , say on a faster straight road , if you let off the accelerator , you get a quiet whining . As if bearing is not happy . It is drive related and not engine as it still happens when I clutch it and put into neutral , and seems related to road speed , not engine .

I am no mechanic but not stupid , and know the new boot/ cv assembly went back properly . Nothing seems loose .

Any ideas ?

And no , petrol and matches are not the answer as thanks to the surf and camper conversion community it’s gone up in value since I bought it .

Does the noise amplify on a left or right?

Jack it up and feel for float in the bearing as cvs can load extra pressure on wheel bearings

And yes the van life hipsters have hindered buying cans but helped with sales

i have considered it , but wouldn’t know how to actually diagnose it in particular , just seeing if anyone had any ideas before I take it to get but hurt at a garage .

Is there a tell tell to diff bearings ?

The whining seems to occur constantly , at low or higher speeds , you can just hear it over the engine when cruising .

Slight turning / weaving as travelling doesn’t throw up and of the grinding noise . It only occurs at a slow speed on the right locks .

I have jacked it up one side at a time and spun the wheels by hand and then in 1st , turning left and right to see if it throws up any of the noises but none from either left and right side .

I did wonder if I have upset something when removing and replacing the cv but can only simulate the noise when driven.

The wheel bearings seem fine , when both “twisted side to side and vertically . No rumble either when spun by hand .

The sound is like something grinding against something else as the shaft spins , but looking under it again there is no sign of anything rubbing or wear to anything .

When I say right lock , it happens from about 10% to full lock , no one particular angle or extreme .


Looking at the current market , I could make another grand on my buy price …. Probably more if I bolt surf board and solar panel on the roof lol .

If it's new since you did the CV joint I doubt if it is the diff bearings. More likely to be a faulty new joint. Did you refit the bevel and spring washer on to the shaft before fitting the joint?

If it wasok before it suggests an iffy new joint

Might be worth pulling it and refitting after a good look

As I guess you had to disturb the brake disc and caliper during the disassembly, then maybe that is where the "grinding" noise is coming from?
Maybe try a light bit of braking whilst cornering to take up any free play there may point to issue. Pads shifted and catching rust ring on outer edge?

I did fit the new washer and bevel shaped nylon . I am just worried that when removing the old i may have upset the joint at the gear box end .

I’ll strip it again over the next few days to see if I can make any sense of it .

I’ll open it up again , and see if I can inspect it for problems . It is just odd that it only occurs on turning one direction , but appreciate the complexity of modern suspension geometry.

I had to unbolt the lower ball joint off he wish bone , to save splitting the ball joint but did split the steering rack ball joint using a spreader type splitter , not a fork as only 18 months ago I fitted new wishbones and ball joints.

I managed to rotate the steering and move the whole hub forward enough to work on it and extract the cv .

Sadly I can’t refit the old cv as a test as I had to cut the race to get it off as the “bull clip” was solid and couldn’t pull the cv off as boped .

My only option would be to buy another cv of a different brand .

I’ll take a look at the disc again and calliper , again I fitted new pads 18 months ago , so wether the calliper is rubbing the disc is a good question . The pads still have plenty left to them when I looked the other day and the disc has only a few mm of lip .

Thanks for the heads up on that side of it . Hasn’t thought of the discs being an issue .

It would make sense , perhaps then tapping the new cv on , with a rubber mallet I could well of upset it . The noise is certainly front centre to the right-ish as had my partner with me so she could help try and locate where the noise is coming from .

I’ll have a google to see how “easy”
It would be to replace it as I’m working curbside with ramps , and not a proper ramp to get it to height .

I doubt that. There can't be a mechanic in the world that hasn't at some time had to seriously beat an outer CV off (with a big copper hammer or worse). The inner joint is constructed differently (not having to work so hard) so the worst you should be able to do is to harmlessly pop the shaft out of the inner joint or on some cars pull the complete shaft and inner joint out of the gearbox and make a lot of mess if you didn't have an oil bucket handy.

When fitting the cv,
Has the wheel bearing 'pulled' together enough, when tightening the cv nut.
Sometimes if the cv is tight when removed, it can pull the wheel bearing apart.

Check the disc backplate isn’t bent and catching on the disc ,check for foreign objects caught behind the calliper (common of Golfs) rubbing when turning , possibly the inner joint?

The inner joint is constructed differently (not having to work so hard) so the worst you should be able to do is to harmlessly pop the shaft out of the inner joint or on some cars pull the complete shaft and inner joint out of the gearbox and make a lot of mess if you didn't have an oil bucket handy.

I was told to beat it to death until it came away But was afraid of beating it to much , plus having barely any room in the arch , so after a few reasonable whacks , I just tilted the cv joint and cut the inner bearing race , then tilted it the other way as so on , so it just fell apart and was then easy to pop the gunked up bull clip or what ever it’s called .

The drive shaft did move about in and out as I worked on it , but not extreme as was conscious that I didn’t really know how that end worked .

Sometimes if the cv is tight when removed, it can pull the wheel bearing apart.

I’ll check that , I hadn’t thought of that , it did take a 3 foot bar with a fat git bouncing on it to undo it , and used a torque bar to re tighten . The hub did slide back on reasonably easy , with a slight smearing of grease .

I’ll undo it tomorrow and check to see how the interface is and get the wheel of so I can check the rear to see how it is .

Somehow I see another adternoon of grease covered mittens !

I hadn’t thought of the guard being a problem , I suppose it could of taken a nudge when I moved it forwards out of the way to work on the cv .. I’ll check it out … wouldn’t it be nice if it was such a simple thing .

Where I live it’s the “beautiful” countryside , roads like the hymilayas , mud and stone , so wouldn’t suprise me if it was some Thing stuck in a strategic spot .

Borrow a torque wrench and do the hub nut up to the recommended torque. You may have done it up F.tight as you thought, but not tight enough - maybe enough mostly pull it in, but its shifted a touch now you've driven it. You might find you get another turn or two on the nut now.
