just reinstated my BOC account and have had a bill through

rental is £102.40 per year for each

this seem expensive?

Just signed up with BOC and had my first invoice:
Gas: Argoshield Light size Y £29.93 + VAT = £35.92
Environment surcharge £0.79 + VAT = £0.95
12 month rental: Argoshield Light size Y £43.70 + VAT = £52.44
When I signed up they confirmed this was the Volkzone deal.

That sounds like you are not on the volkszone deal.
I did make a kind of anonymous call to Boc as a totally new customer of course
And they sent me full details of the costings Volkszone and non volks zone. I have been meaning to update this thread with that info and i will when i dig it out. It does still seem they charge kind of what they feel like on the day.The odd thing is during this anonymous call what they quoted me verbally did not tie up with the mail they send with the so called 'official prices'. This did only apply to one price i will add and not all of the prices they gave me. I'm unsure if this was was by intent or a genuine mistake. Thats twice now what they verbally quoted was well under the official prices. If they have made genuine mistakes when quoting me prices verbally is up for debate.
A few others making anonymous calls to them to get pricing would not a miss. I'm not sure but they may have phone numbers tied to accounts so maybe a good idea to use your misses phone if you get my drift if anyone wants to try this.

You need to be very careful about both the gas that you are specifying and the cylinder size, in order to qualify for the BOC hobbyist deal.
As far as I am aware, there are only two offerings available, both of which are Y-size 230bar. Until someone proves me wrong, no other combinations are on the deal (including the squat cylinders, or the 300bar cylinders).
You can have;
So we're talking, for argoshield light, £81 ex vat (£97.20) per year if you use a Y size cylinder per year. Slightly less if it lasts you more than a year and slightly more if you eat the gas within the year.
For TIG, aka pureshield, the cost is around £74 ex vat (£89) a year.
I made the mistake of signing up for the BOC Hobbyist (then known as volkzone) deal and then ordering the PD then X sizes - as the deal is only available on Y sizes then you find that the largish ("Y") size is way more cost-effective than the smaller ones.

They may quote the bottles differently but they bill them all the same which is anually. i have never known it to be any different. There may be a difference when you return the bottle, with a trade account when you return a bottle and say there is still 6 months left on the contract you will be refunded for the outstanding months. Im not sure if that applies to the Volkswagen deal though.
