Volkszone deal; get a PD or Y cylinder only!

Yikes lesson learned, today!

I'm on the volkzone offer at BOC (highly recommended) but initially got a tiddly little PD size argoshield lite cylinder, at around £20 a year rental.

I know most go for the Y size so when I swapped it the other week, I knew I was going to trade up but the Y seemed to much of a leap so I got an X instead.

(for info; PD = 0.5m3 [ish], X = 2.42m3, Y = 5.02m3)

Got the rental bill in, this morning, and it's £68+VAT a year!
Phoned them up (very helpful, and know all about the volkzone deal) and the offer only really applies to PD and Y cylinders;

PD (0.5m3) = £20ish + vat rental
X (2.42m3) = £68 + vat rental
Y (5.02m3) = £37 + vat rental

So, don't be fooled (like I was) into thinking that smaller is always cheaper. Thankfully, I'm rattling through the X with my new welding table project so I'm planning to take it back and swap it for a Y when it gets to about a 1/4 full (refill costs seem pretty much the same for X and Y).

I thought it only applied to the Y sized bottles. I had a bottle of argoshield on volkzone, then swapped to argon, and eventually back again. they were fine with that but I had to confirm with head office first rather than just wander into a local and tell them I wanted a different gas etc

i have the y argosheild light and the y puresheild, i also thought it only applied to y bottles, used to get w bottles through my work but changed jobs and had to take on the volkszone acc . still better than paying full tilt for your gas though.

the amount I was using it worked out cheaper than rent free on 9L bottles too. will be switching back to pureshield when I buy another welder

When the offer came out it only seemed to be on the Y size, as far as I know this hasn't changed - but BOC do appear to have really woken up to the need for customer service to hobbyists. You no longer need to have a dozen full size cylinders out at once to get them to be reasonable on prices!
