I need to tilt the head on my mill to machine some angled surfaces for the Senior engine casting.


How easy was it to reset the head to Zero after altering?

Any tips?

Tramell milling machine simple tool.

A little fiddly for best results
Made a tool 300mm 25mm square drilled to fit dial guage one end, the other to fit a 12mm ground steel bar fitt and weld or thread.
Insert into collet (preferred) or chuck .
Set on table and load up then set 0, swing 180 deg the error is half the reading, adj head, keep doing it till both readings are 0.
The better DG the finer the finished job.

The tramming tool is the easy bit. Boring head in the spindle, reducer to size of indicator stand rod, mirror.

The challenge can be making the fine adjustments to the machine - the general strategy of snug up the securing nuts and tap it this way and that way wears thin after four or five iterations.

Edit: check the tram before you tilt the head over and see if you can mark something on both surfaces.

Tramming the head is easy enough with a DTI, easier if you have a big bearing that can sit on the table to run the tip on. You can do it rough and ready with a 321 block under the spindle and set it up with that.

My Town Woodhouse is a pain, the locking mechanism is a pair of tapered collets, they pull the head as you tighten them up, the answer is to set to one side to allow for it. It's a pig.

Well….I made up a cheapo trimming tool…

Yesterday set up the main casting to machine the main bearings ready for the caps…Hit another snag, I can’t get in far enough with my face mill, the mill spindle housing is fouling the casting!

Oh well….head scratch time methinks…
