Visiting Museums

I always fancied the air museum in Elvington near York, anyone ever been?

I used to do a lot of work for a company on the industrial estate just behind there but never got the chance to call in, more fool me really I should have made some time

elvington is a good museum, plenty to see. we went last year and i managed to get a tour inside the victor

Me too.I was there when they flew a model Lancaster or Wellington and made a bread drop....to commemorate the actual incident during the war. The "model" plane looked real from where we were but after it landed you could see it wasnt. It was big though. I think it was in the 90s.

It’s the RAF 100th birthday this week so might be worth a visit to some of the related museums.

Though I’m really just posting that so that I can stick this picture up

Not been for years, but the Science Museum stores the stuff not on display in London at Wroughton airfield near Swindon. They only open occasionally but well worth a look if you get the chance - aircraft hangers stuffed with all their big gear.

If you are into military stuff the Combined Military services museum at Maldon in Essex is well worth a day out, its tucked away on an industrial estate but has the most eclectic & awesome collection of weaponry & guns you will ever see, tanks missiles fuses, knives swors, you name it its there & the collection of Capt Peter Mason who was the real life inspiration for James bond, http://www.cmsm.co.uk/,

just a quick update, but it seems as if I've really got an appreciation for our industrial heritage, so I've now signed up as a volunteer as a volunteer at the local industrial museum.

did my first day today, looks like its my cup of tea, its like being a kid in a sweet shop......hmm think that should be sweet factory, as they have a machine that used to be used for wrapping toffee's in working order. Im finding that the complexity of some of the machines is fascinating to watch and just to think how they designed them before the computer age (I know they use pen and paper).

keeps me out of trouble for a few hours on a Saturday when I'll be there
