Vise Jaws - What Material?

What type of material should I use to make a new set of jaws for one of my vises. Its a 6 inch chinese job but one jaw was lost somewhere in moving. Any ideas?

Hi. Most vise jaws are mild steel

vice jaws are generally made of hardened steel,serrated for grip, that's the reason they damage delicate/soft workpieces which is why you use ''soft jaws'' on top of them, I have made them out of mild steel & I allways use 1"x1" aluminium angle over the top of them for most jobs.
