It might have a dynamo and not an alternator but I doubt any were made with 6 volt electrics. Farmers don't go in for dainty stuff

Hi, A quick google suggests it's a Lucas HF 1441, Usually 6V but they do 12V versions as well. Apparently common on motorcycles at 6V.

The horns used on these Dextas varied depending on vintage. This one is made by Clear Hooters Ltd. Sure i've been in a nightclub in Newcastle called that many years ago

No continuity between the two wires.
When i manually close the contacts the voltage drops off and pulls about 1.6 amps.
But it does nothing.

Are the windings goosed, is it worth taking apart?

I thought the horn worked of the windings retracting the core which opens the contacts which then released the coil and on......as in oscillating. There seems to be a tone adjuster missing that shortens/lengthens the stroke which should connect the core to the points. Try lifting the core and energizing the coil, it should retract.

Teas much too weak, that’s the issue .

Is the disc wound down too far, stopping any movement? 1.6A sounds about right and the winding doesn't look to be cooked.

The piece that is missing is what breaks the circuit when the points are pulled open causing the noise as it happens lots of times per second. If you can press the slotted piece of metal really fast you might duplicate the effect and get some sound out of it

unless I'm reading that voltmeter wrong ( for the scale - Hi / lo), it's only getting 2 or 3 volts instead of 12V?

New horn

Cleaned the terminals with some fine wet and dry and soldered some new wires on and this one quite merrily buzzes away.
Turn the power off then back on and the buzz won't initiate (I.e the contacts don't start flapping against each other)
Give it a little prod to separate the contacts and off it happily goes.
I've adjusted the nut to adjust the gap between the contacts but it doesn't do much.

Any ideas?

Hi, They do need a good supply, your 3A power supply may not be enough. Try it on a car battery.
