vintage engines

any one into there vintage engines on here??

ive got a thornycroft RJ2, as far as i know there are only 6 in the country, plus i have a spare one in me workshop.

thinking of rebiulding the one thats running, but as i would have to have all the bits made, eg, pistons,rings and so on, i dont know if i can justify spending the money it will cost.

thornycroft is in me boat.

boat is rivited iron hull, 114yrs old, engine is around 1934.

should realy spend the money on the engine, as its a bit of a rare item out of one of the life boats off the queen mary.

I have a Lister CS Diesel Start-O-Matic gen set, Lister A, hopper cooled, Villers petrol utility engine which I can't remember the type number for, Petter A1, JAP something or other, Onan W3S gen set and a Continental flat 6power packet, which is basically a engine as used in things like a single engined Cessna light aircraft, converted to operate as a stationary engine.
So yes, I do like old engines !

tigler do you use the lister cold start ? people are producing their own power with them using the four pole altenators geared to run them at 1500rpm using bio

Mine is a Start-O-Matic, a self contained 2.5KW, automatic start stop generator and thats exactly what I'll be doing with it, and recovering the heat from the exhaust and cooling system to heat the house !

something ive got to look into, dont think the water pump is upto it though.

at the min its raw water cooled, bit of a pain.

you need to fab a heat exchanger to transfer the waste heat to the rads and so on then when upto temp divert to cooling from river, using the heat exchanger should also prolong the life of the engine with nice clean coolant

The Lister CS has become a bit of a cult.

My father is a bit of a vintage engine buff , he's got a barn full of old engines he tinkers and plays around with.

His prize possesion is a Ruston-Hornsby 9HR (i think) that was bought brand new by my grandad pre-war 1930's perhaps.It ran a sawmill (almost daily runner) untill about 10 years ago.

The 9hr(?) flywheel is 8 feet diamiter approx , the piston slightly larger than a 5 gallon oil drum , and the barrel about the same size as a 45 gallon oil drum.
When working it used less than 5 gallon of diesel a day.

Its main job was running a 8foot cut horizontal cross cut rack saw .

Im goin up there end of next week - ill get some pics for those interested.

I love old engines, had a ride in a 1928 Model T the other day. and a few yrs ago, I bought a LR transfer box from a guy Pontyfract way on, that rebuild Gardiner's he was waiting on a guy from London coming to pick on up he had rebuild, it was a work of art.

Me too! My current employment (although not well paid by any means), does allow me to work on the older stuff, great to see an old Lanchester Monobloc (1928), Gardner, Meadows or Hamilcar(?) being brought back to life, is satisfaction enough to keep on trying to do the right job. Really like making the one-off tooling to keep them going, challenge beats run-of-the mill always
