Mate of mine gave me an old axe head he found in his orchard over at Kington,Warwickshire. I gave it a good brush and a few days in a vinegar bath and have these marks. Anyone recognise them? I am going to try and get more defined images as I think the circle and curve under the crown are actually words. The stamp on the shoulder reads, STEELHEAD.
Thanks for the replies, I will repeat the acid bath as suggested and post any findings. I have checked out countless web pages of known marks but cannot find anything like this anywhere.
Update, more acid bath and a good wire brush and as shown the letters are lost. I’ve searched loads of specialist archives but cannot find this pattern. I’m going to sharpen it up and stick a shaft on it.
Can't be sure but the top pit of the design on the lower part looks like a crown, The same that's stamped in to the old Air Ministry gear!
I've a few axes, One is a U.S. Plumb 1942 model, I read that one was issued to each company during WW2, And strangely it was the medic that held on to it!!
I also have a couple of firemans axes too!
Don't have a pic of them together but they're both the same anyhow!
