Is this Hunter Road force balancing or whay is it? How is the balance adjusted?

It does appear like it might be accurate given it balances an entire assembly but then again tyre rotation is out the window

Years ago I had a reasonably fast Land Rover. The front wheels would vibrate at motorway speeds, I tried everything, and then someone told me about this at the local National Tyres. They balanced them on the LR and I never had another problem!

We had an on car balancing machine, I think in the 8 years I was there it may have been used maybe 20 times at the very most.
I hated using it but some customers would insist on it.

Hunter roadforce balancer is like other dynamic (spin) balancers, except there is a large roller that comes up underneath to simulate road force (up to 1000 lbs IIRC)
This weeds out problems with lamination problems and the like.

Had one at the garage I worked at when I left school, that was 35 years ago.I think we tried to use it once.

Had a Repco one good tool balances all the rotating mass, they did 2 pick ups an air or electronic one which I have never seen
Also had a 4 wheel alignment unit from them WHEN it worked lovely bit of kit but it was the most un reliable bit of S**t, any problem the only people who seemed to service them were in France shame as the boys loved it produced good results when working had 4 X 15 inch meters so unre car you could see minute adjustments

I remember these being used on my 1961 mini with 'new' remoulds (this was in the late '60s) and it wore a groove in the tyres boo hoo

Hard to beat a fresh set of remoulds

They were still in use at lots of garages in the 80's

Back then I had a Morris Minor, asked the guy to balance them and cheeky bugger asked if it actually went that fast

Repco must've rebranded multiple other manufacturers aligners, there was at least one model (1970s) by HPA in Denmark but was labelled "Repco HPA" and "made in Australia"

Balancers under the Replex/Repco brand seem to mostly be made in Australia by the then Repco owned company Warren & Brown. I have seen a Repco dynamic balancer for sale which was labelled made in Japan.

The problem with on car balancers is there is no way to know which side of the rim the weight should be on. From what I understood they aren't usable on the front wheels of minis?

I have a dynamic balancer but if I saw a cheap and complete on car balancer locally I would buy it. I have vehicles which should all be nut centrically balanced but my balancer does not have the attachment so an on car balancer would be good.

If you want a dangerous type of balancer there was a similar thing by Hunter in which a "disc" clamped to the wheel and was spun at high speed. Apparently, as you can expect it wasn't uncommon for them to come flying off.

My Rover SD1 Vitesse was very fussy about wheel balance. This was back in 1988. There was only one garage left in the Swansea area with one. They called it K9 - it looked like Dr Who's dog

Never had a problem with minis
will try and find photo of aligner
