Vice lubrication?

I`m in`process of repainting my lovely 'new-to-me' Record No.6 bench vice (thanks to Wyn!) and wondered what to lubricate the thread and boss with: grease, gear-oil, anti-scuffing/PTFE?.......what`s the ideal?

I drain all the dregs from engine oil, gear oil containers &c into an oilcan and use that for lubricating vices, G-Cramps, hinges and so on.

I just used what ever was in me oil can, usually engine oil. The last while it was EP (extreme pressure) 80 or 90 gear oil with a shot of diesel in to thin it down.

Engine oil is fine , the higher the viscosity the better.

My No.25's got grease on the screw, seems to work pretty well.

Thanks for the replies chaps....
Here it is in it`s new home: with a new paint job and nicely lubed with "140w" gear oil (the 'heaviest' I had).

No.6: "It`s not a number; it`s a free vice"
