Vice Jaws

I've just acquired a Record No3 vice which was missing the jaws, and apart from a weak spring, works fine. Looking at replacement jaws seems an expensive exercise, so is there any reason not to use appropriately size steel bar in their place?

None whatsoever. I’ve had a set of aluminium jaws in mine for the last 20yrs. The stock ones mark the workpiece unless you use soft jaws or those crappy fibre things that last 5mins

Same here, I've made 6" aluminium and copper for softer work, for harder work maybe just steel as its only a 3" vice

Old files work well. May need a spacer but use a torch to heat the spot where you want to drill. As said, stock ones make everything animalised and scored to bits. Soft jaws I made some folded round bits from flattened out 22mm pipe

when ever i needed to hold something in a vice that dont want marked i put a bit of towel round it or get 2 blocks of wood to hold it depending how much pressure is needed
