I went to my local steel scrap yard to get some RHS steel to use in my upcoming workbench project and noticed a broken vice amongst the scrap. I don't yet have a vice - it was on the to-get-list after the workbench.
The vice was nice and heavy for my use (125mm wide) - however, it has a section of the main shaft threads stripped from over tightening.
Since it was only $20 (about 8 GBP) worth of "scrap steel" (and I need all the welding practice I can get) - I figured I'd try an experiment...
I bought it and setup the mig with 0.6 wire (with ArgoShield Light) and decided build up the stripped threads with a bead of weld - and then grind and file the beads close enough the the original thread shape....(yes, I know the professional types reading this must be shaking their heads)
I forgot to photograph the stripped threads - they were about 25% height...
New beads welded:
Start working with grinder(s) and small hand files:
Kept grinding until shape was close enough for this experiment:
It was a fun way to spend a spare evening and so far it held up to my first few "tightening tests" without any visible deformation in the new threads....
If it gives way again - I'll think of something else (Thinking of large bolt and nut)
