Very sensitive wire feed control ELAND 200 single phase

Morning Fella's.
I've had this ELAND 200 mig for a great number of years, still looks like new, very infrequent but necessary use.
The wire feed control has always been very sensitive, just a fraction on the control knob makes a lot of difference.
Has ELAND been taken over ?, in the manual the pot part number is EMO 121 E it shows on a search that it a 10k potentiometer, would a different value make it less sensitive ?.

I've got an eland 200 as well (£50 eBay buy needed new Chinese contactor and a capacitor bleed resistor)) I've found the wire speed a bit sensitive from when i had it.
I spent some time calibrating dial setting and measuring the length of wire in 10 seconds so I could plot control setting against m/s as that's useful to find base settings.

There are two pre-sets on the board that allow min and max speed to be set. I originally aimed for high enough speed for max current on 0.6mm wire but as I've found 0.8 wire good for most stuff ( and have another 40 year old welder set up with 0,6) I think i need to revisit max speed adjustment which will reduce the sensitivity of speed control.
Ill need to check the circuit diagram I found ( on here I think as its pretty well Murex) but i toyed with adding an additional resistor (as I recall) that would offer low &high speed range.

If I get a minute ill have a look as I try and keep info together as I find it (but often lose track of the safe storage place!)

It was the same guy selling both and the Murex seemed to have burned transformer but looked new, as you can see mine has "patina" of use

You can get "multi-turn" pots.
So they need more rotation of the dial for the same output.

Nice - I have one of these too. My first ' big' welder and I like the large number of voltage steps. It seems very capable. I haven't noticed the wire feed feeling particularly sensitive, but I have noticed that I only need a small part of the total available rotation as at full chat it's spewing wire all over the place, and I haven't tried it on very thick stuff. Certainly for <1mm up to 3mm the knob seems to need only a small adjustment, though that could be my technique...

A potentiometer is a potentiometer. The only crucial bits are the shaft size and type (otherwise the knob won't fit - if it's a splined shaft for a push-fit knob and you get a D-shaped shaft designed for a grub screw then you'll be annoyed); and the fitting method. Some use a small pin that locates in a hole in the front plate of the unit, which stops the potentiometer rotating. Others rely on a clamping nut, and one might fit while another doesn't.

@charliecambs that link isn't working for me. Does the thread contain a circuit diagram? It would be handy to have one for future reference rather than tracing one out...

This is up for sale and I'm wondering if it's worth a punt....or not. Info from seller is sketchy..
....." It got hot and smoked....the windings had got hot"....
....and that's all I know! If it is main windings then worst case is needing another transformer from another machine for a cost effective repair?
But it could be a problem in the circuit somewhere needing identification.
Would you? Should I?

Not sure where I found these and they aren't the best reproductions but pages 2 and 4 are probably of most interest.
I agree with Dragnet that on 1mm to 3mm I tend to be about 4 to 5 on speed . As far as I can see the wire feed speed is not varied by the voltage switch settings ( IIRC i tested this when tabulating wire feed speeds).

Although I was an electronics engineer (avionics mainly) for 45 years I have become a little rusty on the 555 timer configuration which seems a little more than "basic" from the circuit diagram which I need to redraw and scratch head on.

A quick thought might be a new resistor in series with RV2 (max speed) adjuster between it and the 4k7 resistor , with a switch shorting that resistor would effectively increase RV2 value ,which i assume will reduce the upper voltage to the speed control pot hence reducing wiper volts and wire speed.

Not sure if @eddie49 might agree?
I'm busy tomorrow but always looking for something that needs tinkering with
