The great virtue of old machinery is it was built to last. If you had to purchase the equipment when new it would probably have been prohibitively expensive. Now that so few individuals (like we happy few) need or indeed desire the equipment the price has become rasonably affordable.
I am quite happily using a Q&S power hacksaw & a Myford lathe that date I reckon from the 1970’s. The former was rescued from where I used to work as scrap for £10 & the latter from a mate for under £500.

We have several customers who use us to ship old British lathes and milling machines etc. We collect from around the UK and then they go to India and Pakistan. They would much rather old British machines than new Chinese ones! The most popular are Jones and Shipman surface grinders.
They need to import a teacher or two to show them how to use them. Anything bike related i have bought, that turned out to be from india, was junk.
There's been some great stuff in this thread. There must be lots more from you chapsOnly a small machine this time from my rest home for old and tired machine tools; or as usually call it, my workshop; I bought this old 'Wolf' powered flexible drive from a plausible liar at an autojumble "oh, yes, works perfectly, used it a few weeks ago" well, I had it working several weeks later after putting new bearings in the gearbox, skimming and undercutting the commutator, replacing the brushes and making a new collet -the old one came out in 3 pieces. It is a great little machine though, much handier for cylinder head porting than an electric die grinder, and much quieter than an an air die grinder

-I use a foot pedal switch to control it rather than the toggle switch that it came with.

Martindales, I reckon the most comfortable to wear of the disposables, in days gone we used to use them for everything, spraying , grinding, welding, the lot.Longtime since Ive seen that type of face mask
They'll come on, in time. We've been through the same with Taiwan, now China, and India is still a fledgling.
But china has always had the ability to make good stuff, i remember as a small kid being given a pressed steel wind up toy car. It was made in china and it lasted years. That was in the 70's. The only reason chinese stuff is not good, is the western companies make them build stuff down to a price.
I'll take a clearer pic of the details if anyones interested.
