Very odd problem with my BMW (and it's not the indicators!)

Hi Gavlar ...they are coming today as must have been in the UK warehouse ....not exactly 'cheap' .....just under £600 delivered ...... but they are very big tyres!!! (Tyreleader UK)

If it was passive components it would be bad from the off? Ie springs, struts, shafts etc

The drives ok for a bit suggests mechanical or heat affected components... disks, brakes, boxes?

at 18k is it still under manufacture warranty?

No out of warranty last year.... I've ordered new tyres as opinions say the non-starred tyres can affect the (expensive) transfer box. Just had a reply from the bimmerforum who also suggests a rear caliper seizing when hot...

Can calipers be 'fixed' or just replaced ...mine are (of course) the expensive blue Brembo types ......

Sometimes callipers "seize" because the brake flexi has become delaminated inside. So you change the calliper and nothing changes.

calipers can easily be rebuilt and all parts incl pistons are usually relatively cheap and avaliable form the likes of brakeparts.co.uk , thats of course the caliper housing itself is still serviceable. theres also a few used rear calipers on ebay for around 200 quid also.

if its a sticky brake though, you should easily find the culprit being significantly hotter after a drive.

Seizing calipers are fairly easy to diagnose. Just go round after a drive and feel each of the wheels. If one is hotter than the others then you have an issue.

Typically however you would also be able to smell it as well as see that the disc has over heated (it'll be a different colour!)

Bigg Red in Worcester is a source of brake calliper seals & do a rebuild service as well.

It's not the brakes...also had the alignment done..it's not that ....can't find anything wrong with the CV joints ...getting the new tyres fitted with everything crossed (I also need a new wallet as this one is wet through from crying!!)

Just had 4 new (expensive) runflats fitted. Tyre fitter was putting the last wheel on and saw a load of grease ...from the OSF inner CV joint so fault found - anyone wanna buy 4 almost new non-runflat tyres

Would have been nicer if the mechanic who looked at it in post one would have seen the grease.

Have you checked the ashtray? keep the non runflats for a while, you may not like the ride on runflats!
