I've seen the motorised ones in pics - & they do look rather good. Even the manual ones are quite a few quid for something I'd only use rarely, so unless I found an absolute bargain......

I do wonder about the motor fine control when working solo (foot control??) .... and the potential for some clumsy berk (me) to squish digits in one?

The one I saw was a big heavy cast iron thing. Proper industrial.

Yes, I imagine there is plenty of opportunity for trips to A&E with ones fingers in a bag of frozen peas ...........

Should always wear gloves with them too, as the material can snatch.

I'd say there has to be some cause as to why one side is rusted out, while the other is sound.

That was really common back in the day when cars had buffer-all protection. Always the nearside rotted first, because it got the most of the mucky salty water that cambered off the road and lay in the mud traps of the box sections, inaccessible wings, etc.
