Hi, I'm after a bit of advice............
Done a fair amount of stick welding before now over the last ten years or so welding structural steelwork with all sorts of rods; vodex, esab Ok48.00 7018s, esab OK38 7024s etc, on all sorts of thicknesses 10mm+, and far too much mig welding in all positions over all thicknesses 2-100mm for my liking lol
Test ive been practicing for is a T joint, vertical and horizontal. Horizontal is fine, its the vert i'm having issues with lol
Vertical 6mm butt joint, no prep, 3mm gap, root stoved with 3.2 celtain 6010s at 85amps DC+, then capped with 3.2 vodex, background then capped with vodex on the back. Root has been going in lovely, the problems im having are with the capping pass. Using 100amps DC+ for a 3.2mm vodex everything goes lovely at first, but sometimes am getting a little too much build up and too high a crown on the cap, until i get about 3-4" up the joint and it always starts to penetrate into the plate massively leaving me fighting against undercut until it all goes to pot.
Tried turning juice up a bit and travelling faster makes no difference, tried turning it down a little and it wont stay lit, tried different manipulation patterns, ie moving in smal circles, upwards in a "z" pattern, upside down "u" motion, all to no avail.
Had the arc force set low, but enough to not stubb the rod out holding a real tight arc of under 2mm in length, but no mater what i try, its the same thing. Goes in real nice for a bit but a bit too high of a cap, then starts to excessively penetrate and all goes to pot.
Im all out of ideas and starting to get a bit peeved off with myself, as done fair bit of stick before but this is getting the better of my patience!!!
Im sure there is something ive overlooked but cant put my finger on it no matter how hard i try lol
If anyone can help id would appreciate it massively lol
Thank you
