Vent Hole

I am needing to put a 2 1/2 inch hole in the wall of my workshop for the vent pipe from my powder coating cure oven. What going to be the easiest way? I only have holesaws for wood.

It's only one course of brick.

Get a Diamond core drill like this:

Fairly easy to use but only use with a drill that has a safety clutch as they can grab and spin the drill out of your hand resulting in some broken bones. Also don't use the hammer action as this can cause the drill to shatter.

I got a 75 mm core cutter off ebay for around £6, did the job fine and they are available in most sizes I think.

If 100% perfection is not an issue I would simply drill a ring of small diameter holes then gently tap away with a cold chisel, even by this method I have obtained some fairly accurate circular holes.

Drill series of 8-10mm holes as close to each other in circle

Neatest way is to use a masonry drill with appropriately sized cutter head. Plumbers have those sorts of sizes these days. Alternatively a diamond core drill.

If you can't get access to such technology either knock out a half brick if it lines up where you want the hole or mark round hole, chain drill around circumference and knock out with masonry chisel and hammer. If you elect to chain drill work from the outside as it tends to blow out masonry on the back of the hole

Core drill bit of the correct size but don't use it in a drill set on hammer. That size as a one off will be fine in a largeish hammer drill set on drill only and take it easy don't rush it through

There's one retired rigger I know who still swears me blind he's never blown a chunk of brick face off with a drill. Don't believe it myself, but he sticks to his story adamantly.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

I had already considered drilling a load of small holes, but want it to be neat and simple. I was in wickes today picking up some timber and ordering the insulation and acoustic board so thought I would look for suitable drill bit, nothing - just holesaws like I already have. I'll go have a look fore a core cutter, see if anything reasonably priced is about.

I did think of hss, picture on the advert is a worky using said tool. But at £52 for the day to drill one hole, no bloody chance!

Thanks for the advice on hammer setting, i would have naturally put it on that being brick.
